Except if you want to convert into kg you multiply by 1000 and you're going to lose accuracy to the tune of around 10% (this hides food price inflation quite well)

Where as in kg you can simply move the decimal point / divide by 1000 to get the gram price to several decimal points. They are doing it by gram to hide food hyperinflation in Canada.
