"at a bbq" means "standing around drinking in someone's backyard with a bbq lit and some meat thrown on there".
here in Australia we'll also tie a goonbag of wine to a clothesline, spin it and drink from it cuz its just what you do at bbqs sometimes.

more like, as an alternative to sausages on white bread, someone'll bring a 24pack of dinner rolls and you'll make burgers out of those and whatever salad's on the table.
coleslaw, beetroot, pineapple slices, tomato, hell...asparagus and shaved carrot work in a pinch.

it's fucking hot so no-one wants to put much effort in or overthink much. just slap random salad and a patty on a dinner roll, bam, burger. good enough to enjoy when fucking wasted on your 9th can of 12% Bundy Rum & Coke or if you've been doing pic related all afternoon.
