China has an extremely similar dish called Beggar's Chicken. The difference is that the chicken is fully prepared and heavily seasoned, then wrapped with lotus leaves before the mud-coat and roasting.

I've eaten it before, and can confirm it's very tender and aromatic with a wonderful earthy flavour.
