American beer shelves are very crowded and there's a lot of extremely young breweries who need to make very eye catching labels in order to stand out so you even notice their beer. It's not pretension, it's marketing. This is probably a lot less prevalent in Germany where most of your breweries are centuries old and are, for the most part, very well established brands.
