Serious question. If you don't like... buy groceries and make basic meals for yourself, how are you even living? Do you just blow $500 or more a month on whatever pre-made garbage you can get from fast food restaurants and convenience stores? It seems way too expensive to not cook, and yet most of the people I know who don't cook, aren't exactly rich.

they're not for pleasure.
proper ones are retardedly fucking expensive. they also do this >>14006105 too.
Military friends give me some random shit from their ration packs and I add that stuff in to my own home-made MREs.
I keep a couple in my car in case of breakdown, take 1 or 2 extra in my /out/ kit in case bad weather or an accident keeps me in place for longer than I planned for and I keep a couple around the house in case of a disaster, earthquake or power outage that lasts more than a couple of days.

>Or is it good in a pinch
basically things.
you keep a can or two at home in case your meat's bad or you've run out of meat.
you keep a few dozen cans in your long-term stores in case of fire/flood/earthquake/tornado/virus or whatever bullshit affects your area.
i keep a can in my car in case I break down miles from anywhere just so I can have some fried meat camping on the side of the highway.
it's nice to take a can or two out camping as well just so you can have fresh meat in the last few days of your trip, should you be away from a cooler or thru-hiking.

pic related: you can buy individually packaged slices of spam, shit's good in home-made MREs.

/out/ here.
i make my own like pic related, keep one or two in my 4wd, a few in my house in case power goes out and take a couple extra when I go /out/ (in case I get stuck out there longer than I anticipate).

yeah that's what I'm saying.
Spam's nice but it's not "pay twice the price of actual meat" nice.
So I only get it when /out/ or for emergency kits.
You can also buy individual spam slices, which are convenient to make little home-made MREs like pic related.

Like this. A lot of this stuff is a bit of trouble to make but as long as you can boil water you should be able to eat everything in it. Besides you could always pack some esbit in there like they do in European MRE's

>17 people, the fuck - are you sure OP?
http://www.hellawella.com/10-foods-last-forever-plus-how-store-them

Saw something earlier somewhere about $900+ for 6 months of rations for like 4 people or whatever.
Get your water out of the way first and expect to trade with other survivors if you need food. Have purification tablets ready.
You'll want to hunt if the possibility exists. If you can, scout and make note of other survivors. Regularly check in on them to see if you can't scavenge what they leave behind.
You can make your own rations, and you can make the food that you put in your homemade rations.
Otherwise, just use Google.

And be prepared for this, know what you can and can't eat. Couldn't hurt. I recommend trying monkey first just to prepare yourself mentally - maybe?

In a SHTF situation calories are more important than taste and the flora available to you will be purely dependant on your location and season.

Never bring tinned foods, it's just extra weight. Look into MRE's and other long shelf items which are dried like noodles and jerky.

For herbs and spices, try curry powder, dried chilli flakes, Oxo cubes, soup packets etc.
