Ball peen hammer, center dome, knocks em out pretty quick but they might twitch a bit.
Personally I preferred to just used a war club or something heavy, cracks the fuck outta their skull.
Dogs are terrible meat, you need something lazy like a cat or a chicken to fatten up with food you won't eat.
Rats and other varmints are good for that.
