Imagine if you were running a highly developed first world economy dominated by a certain ethnic group (let's call it "chinese") that got all of its water through the pipes in this picture, and those pipes worked at the discretion of a much larger neighboring third world country that was dominated by a different ethnic group (let's call them "malays") that resented your ethnic group for its success and politicized the existence of those pipes, and, more generally, trade and transport between your countries.

Let's suppose that the pipes were a constant source of worry for you and even little things like less dish washing could be considered helpful in reducing dependency on your larger, resentful neighbor.

Can you see how perhaps this situation wouldn't really be applicable to most other countries? Such as the Netherlands, for instance?
