They don't
>t. Raises and breeds ducks. In this pic you can see a female khaki campbell mounting a male white pekin, the male pekin is mounting another khaki campbell. Don't get me wrong, they rape too, but the females also get horny sometimes.

Here's a pic of my livestock. Obviously I can't make you believe me, but you might be surprised to find that not everyone on this site lives in their moms basement or a studio apartment in the city.

Ty i raised, slaughtered, and butchered him myself. This is a different duck than the one i had for xmas. I salt cured that one and then dried the skin up. The meat was super tender and flavorful. I want to make duck prosciutto.

Cant want to start incubating the next generation of duck dinners! Im so proud of these guys.

Humanure is kind of a tricky subject. I have looked deeply into it. Human shit is very different from animal shit. I have wild animals shit all over my property and I never smell it. Even my livestock shit doesn't stink much (I don't allow it to stink because I manage it with deep bedding or pasture rotation)
Human shit REALLY fucking stinks and has a very distinct smell. My neighbor has hunters on his property and one of them fucking shit without burying it and you could smell it for a mile for hours on a cold day. It was insane.

Human feces tends to have a lot of pathogens, and these pathogens are very communicable to other humans, even more so than animal to human pathogens. So humanure needs to be extensively processed before turned into compost. One thing I want to do is have an outhouse and when it is filled with waste and sawdust I'd probably plant a high value wood or slow growing nut tree.

Human shit in the city is pretty gross. City tap water is treated human shit water.

As a former vegetarian I can tell you vegan turkey fucking sucks and is dry as shit.

I will be roasting a duck I raised, slaughtered, and butchered for Christmas.

Look at my cute ducks and tell me they are poison.

Duck meat is delicious! And I definitely glad I got them.
I am currently working 1 acre of land for pasture rotation. You could easily have 40 ducks on that. I ordered that many but had mostly males (so a lot of meat!!!).
Start up isn't cheap but isnt expensive either. I'd say on feed, infrastructure, eggs, fencing, etc, I spent less than 2 thousand dollars. Keep in mind that's for the startup, the fencing was definitely the most expensive part since I wanted something mobile (they are currently stationary for the winter while I use deep bedding to keep them warm/create free compost).

Ducks, in my opinion, are pretty easy to care for and are a great beginner livestock. They are flock animals and like to stick together, you have to give them a pool in hot weather but they are incredibly cold tolerant. They love the snow and can be outside with no infrastructure what so ever in temperatures as low as 20 degrees!

Brooding was tough because I didn't have a great system, but through trial and error bedding and something to keep water from getting everywhere will do wonders. I bought the ducklings in early June and only kept them in the brooder box for a week and a half.

I slaughtered the excess male ducks when they were about 12-16 weeks old. Keeping a ratio of 1 male for every 4-6 females (preferably 6).

Dressing the duck was something I enjoyed, but it is incredibly time intensive. If you want to save time you can invest in a plucker or wax, but I used neither. After slaughtering the duck I scalded in 150-160 degree water with a bit of dish soap for 90 seconds, making sure to slosh the ducks around so the soap would penetrate their oil glands to loosen up their feathers.
They are apparently more difficult to pluck than chickens. I have only dressed ducks so I couldn't tell you other than each duck which I meticulously plucked (head and everything) took 2-3 hours.
Gutting is pretty easy once you figure everything out....
