You don't have to:
1) eat an outlandish number of beans to become ill
2) eat them raw - if not prepared properly by at minimum boiling them, you haven't removed lectins and you're at risk. If you want to be safe pressure cook them
3) Cooked and canned beans can caused issues, but are in general quite safe, yes.

I agree with your point on spinach but due to what diseases lectins can cause I'm much more wary of my bean intake.
