Depends on what kind you have. The "Jaccard" (pic related) does indeed make the steak more tender, but it's not a miracle worker. It helps improve steaks but it's not going to make a $4/lb piece of chuck taste like USDA Prime Tenderloin.

If you have a meat hammer, that's generally not used for "steaks" in the normal sense of the word. It's really for flattening out the meat, for making things like schnitzel, or to flatten the meat so you can roll other ingredients inside it.
