I don't think anyone really says we can't *survive* without animal products, but we thrive with them when included in a balanced diet. B12, iron, vitamin A, highly concentrated high quality protein, etc. benefits us. Overconsumption can be an issue, but that's true of anything. Omnivorous athletes regularly outperform vegan athletes except in a few cases like marathon running where low body weight is advantageous.

Studies show that meat eaters can achieve higher fitness levels than vegetarians and vegans. Obviously that's not an argument most people can use with obesity being such a major problem today, but animal products do provide health benefits that you can't get from plant foods.
