Over-armored my ass. I've been repeatedly exposed to officers in body-armor responding to mild disturbances. They have always been professional and polite; I'd rather deal with them than the swarm around that car.

I had more of a hands on experience. For exercise and other healths' sake I recommend practicing the katas from something like isshin ryu, stretch beforehand. Shadowboxing is a great workout and way to dissolve yourself. You can meditate through action, eventually learning to move through instinct alone.

You don't have to be a proficient fighter as the goal here is not to fight, but to improve your body and mind. Put as much or as little effort into it as you see fit. Just keep in mind the level of scams in "karate" is similar to those of meditation, yoga, and hipster diets.
