What you've posted is specifically a decanter for (red) wine. The flat bottom allows more contact with the air and makes it easier for sediment to settle.

Pic related is what's usually used for spirits.
There isn't much of a reason to use it other than design. There used to me more of a point to it. People would directly fill these from the cask.
