A lot of sauces given to westerners in cheap imitation chinese use the spices we only associate with baking like ginger, star anise, cinnamon, etc and then are overly sweetened.

Let's be honest here, most people griping about south east asian food, which is the flavor of the month for bitching, probably haven't tried it. Eating at places aimed at Americans aren't going to try to make their food; not only will it not appeal to a lot of customers but a lot of the ingredients will be more difficult to find.
