How common is mineral water overseas?

Every language I've bothered learning (well only European languages), one of the most common phrases they give you involves mineral water. And usually when I go to some store or bakery catering to those languages, mineral water is about as common as any other drink they deserve.

What the fuck is a mineral water, anyway? No, seriously. I'm a Ameritard, so I don't get it.
