OP's situation aside, on the general subject: Did you know that some bodegas run EBT-for-cash scams? (With the victim ultimately being the taxpayers.)

>Alice gets her $200 monthly EBT credit
>goes to Bob's Corner Market
>Bob buys the card (or "rents" the card) for $150 in cash
>over next few weeks, Bob makes fake sales using the card until funds are exhausted
>Bob eventually gets reimbursed by state
>end result: Alice gets instant cash to use for buying "school supplies", etc; Bob gets $50 profit

Now, I should hesitate to judge the individual people involved in these scams; poverty is ugly, and people who are accustomed to ugliness are easily tempted to do ugly things. But it does make you wonder if newer technology (e.g. fingerprint confirmation at the register) could help deter such abuses of the system.
