Did some research, and It turns out I'm wrong about the butter thing.
Still seems super gross.

Bourbon is primarily sweet, with notes of oak, char, and sometimes spice.
Scotch is less sweet, is often smoky and has a much wider variety of flavors and styles compared to bourbon.

For good whiskey, take very small sips of it straight/neat, not chilled, and roll it around your tongue for several seconds before swallowing it to fully appreciate it.
For shitty whiskey, just don't drink it in the first place.
If you want mixing booze just buy $10 handles of vodka and be done with it.
