First, that is PROCESSED MEAT, which is categorically different to fresh meat due to the chemical additives that are obviously not present in fresh meat. Second, this is not new information and has been warned against for some time. Third, the types of cancer that have been found to be associated with diets revolving around routine processed meat consumption are colorectal and prostrate cancers. Not that the last two have any bearing on whether or not one should consume processed meat (minimally, at most), but it's worth being explicit as to what types of associations are made as there is no such thing as a singular cancer, but rather, types of cancers.

As of now, the WHO only asserts that there is a probable chance that diets based around routine fresh meat consumption can be linked to increased cancer (of the types listed above) risk factors. There are only a limited number of studies that have positive correlation (<20% increase, and a tentative mechanism) for fresh meat-inclusive diets, and because of that, there has been no conclusive or definitive decision made as to the link between diets containing fresh meat consumption and certain types of cancer.

The only caveat is that high temperature cooking of fresh meat has the possibility of producing aromatics that are known to be carcinogens (when they were studied independently); thus, there is a tentative link between the cooking process and carcinogen formation. That said, that is even less established than the above.

All of this is explicitly laid out on the WHO's website. Stop with this fucking meme.

The food network folks seem to have made a conscious effort to force them all to pronounce it, "Mass-car-pony."
What bothers me isn't really a pronunciation of a word so much as the affectation of another language. Breaking out into a bad Italian/Mexican/Whatever accent just for a single word really gets on my nerves. Especially since no one does it for Asian ingredients. You know damn well they'd get called out as racist or some shit if they just went, "So now we've got to run over and grab our ingredients, which include MEE-SOH PASTE-U, SHOY SHAUCE-ARU and a medley of delicious vegetables."
