It's true for sure. When I lived in England, I would spend the equivalent of $15 on groceries because there was so much ready-made crap and snacks available for £1-2. Sure, if you buy the right ingredients then you could make cheaper meals, but if you're a poorshit living from paycheck to paycheck then you're probably going to shy away from the upfront costs involved and decide that you'd rather down £1 bags of store-brand bacon rashers than live on variations of rice and beans.
