Fucking love those little Duvel style stubby bottles. Amazing to repackage homebrewed belgians in because the bottles can hold so much pressure.

They're a subset of sour ales. Most are very complex, due to the variety of wild yeasts in the beer. Common species include members of Lactobacillus, Brettanomyces, and Pediococcus in addition to the more traditional Saccharomyces cerevisiae. It's much more common in Belgium, but a lot of American brewers have taken interest in the style. A common technique is fermenting the ale in an exposed manner such that wild yeasts local to the area will come and ferment the wort. Wild yeasts can also be added using fruit skins.

The trappists in Europe didn't even want to let them brew beer at first because they thought their reputation would be ruined because all American beer is Bud light.

They had a brief surge around the same time NEIPA blew up. Of course, the larger breweries picked up on it and, desperate to keep up with trends, churned out a bunch of quick and cheap kettle sours and goses to throw on the shelf, and most people lost interest pretty quickly.

Speaking of sours, this was one of the better flemish reds I've had recently and would recommend for people interested in that sort of thing.
