So that's about forty dollars Australian right now. For forty dollarydoos a week I can buy;

Bread $3.40 a loaf (myself personally I'd save money by buying a kilo of flour for a dollar and baking my own, I like baking)

Two heads of garlic for $2.50
Ten chilies for 12c, so $1.20

Weather conditions have been kind of shit for growing tomatoes here, so the price of fresh tomatoes has gone up. Now it's a dollar ten for a single tomato. Well, SINCE I'M ON FOOD STAMPS AND HAVE TO BUDGET clearly I'll only buy fresh tomatoes and break my bank on them and then cry about not having enough money. Or I could just get instead;
2 400g cans of peeled tomatoes for a total of $5.50
Chicken Breast 1kg $8
White Rice 2kg $2.80
Brown Onion 1kg $2.90
Oh no. This is 90 cents over my budget. Since I don't have another dollar to my name, I guess I'll put a can of tomatoes back and a kilo of salt for 90 cents, and a little shaker of dried basil for a dollar twenty.

Ok, my meals this week are going to be slapdash as I push those vegetables and four chicken breasts across seven days. But that's ok. The eggs will last me more than a week. So next week I'll get eggs and have more than I did this week. The rice will last me over a week too, as will salt, basil, etc. See, the basil? I can buy a different type of herb every week, after four weeks I'll have four kinds of herbs and spice, after a year I'd have at least thirty, factoring in replacements. Herbs and spices are how you take the same basic ingredients and make wholly different meals after all. And I'm getting all this from one store. I'd be shopping around

And personally? I'd be growing my own vegetables and my own herbs. I'f I've got forty dollars a week to feed myself, I clearly have no job and have the free time. I'm doing that right now, even with a job.
