I make them put the cheese and the pickles on a seperate plate and put it in their freezer and bring it out to me when the burger is done.

That way, the pickles and cheese don't heat up by touching the meat on their way from the kitchen. I get my satisfying cold crunch of pickles and verdant taste of sharp cheese instead of a mass of indistinguashable slop.
