Almost all Asian food is some variety of "peasant food", since throughout history almost all Asians were very poor and needed to use common ingredients or uncommon parts of butchered animals. You'll also notice that many Asian recipes are very simple in terms of ingredients, but may have a "twist" such as fermentation or inclusion of an ingredient that our western palates may describe as clashing with the other ingredients of the dish, which is done to bring a uniqueness to an otherwise dull dish.

Take natto for example, if it wasn't fermented it would just be soy beans. A cheap and plentiful ingredient which would get quite boring after only a short time, but becomes much more complex and varied once put through a fermentation process.
