Incorrect. The Comonwealth fuel cans (known as 'flimsies') were thin-walled and fragile, comfortable to carry, difficult to fill or use without a funnel, and prone to splitting. They actually looked a lot like large food oil cans we have today (pic related, middle two cans).
German fuel cans (which are what we think of now 'Jerry cans') were far superior, and greatly prized by Commonwealth forces, who dubbed then Jerry cans because 'Jerry' was literally slang for 'German' in the Commonwealth forces.
