Used to live in Indiana for a couple years and my mom lives in Chicago now, so I'm up there a few times a year.

My favorite restaurant in Chicago is the Berghoff off of West Adams. Part of it is nostalgia, as it was both my grandfather and great-grandfather's favorite restaurant in Chicago when they used to live there in the 1930s and 1940s.

Everything they have is hearty as fuck. They bring out some really good pumpernickel rye bread when you sit down ever so slightly warm. They have a great beer selection and even do a few house brews that are good.

Portions are huge.

The restaurant itself is original from 1898 and it's beautiful. It's not dark, but it's a comfortable, old world dim. Lots of history around the restaurant.

Other than that, I'd suggest finding a Rally's along the way for a quick burger. They're called Checker's in other parts of the country, and I don't think I've ever seen one in Houston. Best fries I've ever had. Burgers, if my memory is clear, are reminiscent of Five Guys.

We went to the airshow at Oshkosh one year and on our way out we stopped by a place called the Machine Shed (there's apparently a few of them in the midwest, think originating from Iowa). It's like an even better version of Cracker Barrel. Highly recommended.
