on the one hand, i can attest that ive had luck making friends by going to bars by myself and plenty of gay dudes have asked to smash or recommended me to someone else to smash, on the other, I've noticed that in the past ~3 years it's been getting harder and harder to go out alone and not get told off by people, and i see other singles out and about less and less

I'm no single issue voter but I blame Tinder and similar social media rando dating applications. where people used to go out to meet new people when their normal circle isn't enough (or they don't have a normal circle at all) they just use online applications like Tinder and Friendster and Meetup.com

in fact, once, i was just drinking by myself and some guy kept making eyes at me. I was feeling salty and just out to drown my sorrows by myself so I didn't engage, but he actually came up first and it turned out he thought I was waiting for the same Meetup.com group as him. friendly people definitely still exist, but the vectors through which you meet them are all gone and replaced with internet shit

even just going out to practice pool, you either take your life into your hands by asking the abbos if you can take a turn, or you get kicked out for "harassing" the ytpipo clients. it used to be that pool is how you bond with new people in a bar in the first place and fill dead air, not so anymore

no one will bother you if you keep to yourself and only go to have a beer and a hotdog and watch The Big Game but if you go to a pub to socialize, sorry, singles bars dont exist anymore, everyone's on Tinder and Friendster now

most people here dont work in kitchens and probably never have but it does in fact produce a lot of drug and alcohol users

i think though that /ck/ has so many because someone functional enough to cook for themselves (or is in a situation where they have to cook for themselves) but who is still on 4chan probably has a lot of problems and may have turned to the bottle in response.
