Not exactly food related, but back when I got my pellet smoker I had a whole series of "mishaps" that occurred while trying to get it to work.

I got it second hand, so it was already dirty when I bought it. But while I was transporting it, some pellets got wedged in the vent fan which caused it to stop moving.
I didn't know the vent fan was even there, so I didn't even know it was an issue.

When I first turned it on, the auger kept churning pellets into the kiln, but the kiln wouldn't ignite because there was no air flow. Without realizing it, the kiln overflowed with pellets.
After about an hour of this, I finally realized the vent fan existed and unclogged it. Queue catastrophe.
About 10 minutes later, the overflowing pellets all ignited at once and the smoker started emitting a small cloud the size of my living room right. You could have seen the result from at least a mile away.

I kept trying to get close enough to the smoker to turn it off and let the flame peter out, but the smoke had become so thick by this point that it was actually conducting electricity from the auger, fan, and heating elements. The damn thing kept shocking me just from getting close to it.
So in addition to a roaring fire in my "new" smoker, I've now got a literal electrical storm in my backyard. It only stopped after I unplugged the damn thing, and it was a full hour before the flames died down enough for me to finally clean it out.
You'd think that would be the end of it, but while I was cleaning it out, it turns out there was still one faint ember hiding in the ashes. I managed to suck that up with my shopvac, and next thing I know the shopvac's filter burst into flames and the whole damn process started all over again. Except now with the smell of burning plastic.

It's a miracle the fire department wasn't called on me that day. A fucking wild learning experience.
Other than a melted shopvac, at least the smoker still works.

It's still my greatest shame. I can't even remember how I did it, just my mom yelling at me.
