They became popular with students at a place near a university, so they got called university potatoes.

Daigakuimo, university potatoes. They're named that because they were invented at a restaurant near a university in Tokyo and became popular with the students.

Daigaku imo, university potatoes. Their name supposedly comes from the shop that invented them being right near a university, and these fried honeyed sweet potatoes became popular with the students.

When I lived in Japan I very much enjoyed introducing people to new foods. None of my coworkers had ever had pecans, for example.
I took two different women out to different Mexican restaurants, I took a girl to an Australian coffee shop. A former student of mine was going to study abroad in England, so I found an Indian place that did Butter Chicken curry and treated her.
I had daigaku imo for the first time with two cute chicks, that was nice.
None of them were ever my girlfriend though.

University potatoes. I wasn't expecting to enjoy them since I'm not big on sweet potato or honey, but they fucking work.

It's soup curry and it's fantastic. I'm pretty sure the rice is white, it's just lighting making it look weird.
These daigaku imo are yellowish, though

When you've been living there for years that kind of thing loses meaning.
If I were just going for vacation I wouldn't be eating at a McDonald's.

Try any new food recently?
I had daigaku imo for the first time. It's fried sweet potato with honey. I'm not a big sweet potato fan but these are pretty fucking good.
