Not true. Italy is a peninsula after all, aren’t you forgetting seafood? In any case, of course wheat is going to be a staple. Why do you think rice is a staple in east Asia? It’s a grain, and peasants cant afford to subsist on meat alone. The same goes for cheese and dairy. Every single cuisine has its staple ingredients, mainly based around what was traditionally available. If you think Italian food is bland and boring, you need to broaden your horizons. The average Italian household does not eat spaghetti and meatballs and pizza every night.

Italian food is popular in almost every country, anyways. They’re doing something right.

Panera is probably the top of the bell curve in terms of food adventurousness. I've known so many foreigners and immigrants that claim Americans won't try the food of other cultures, but the second you put something that's not from their culture in front of them, they won't eat it. This isn't a picky eater thing either - it's just that the average person, on an average day, doesn't want to try something strange and foreign to them.
