I worked for a struggling boatbuilder years ago. He was hand to mouth & an empty order book was normal.
He/we scored a Dutch barge then another in quick succession, so a year of work at least.
When potential customers called wanting a narrowboat, which happened daily to be honest, instead of promising them the world in 6 weeks & being really accommodating, he'd cut them off & say 'Sorry we're too busy, call back next year.'
Within a couple of months the order book was unironically years long.
Seems the first rule of sales is telling people to fuck off.
