Genuine, soft tacos have history going back thousands of years.
Hard shell was invented by Taco Bell in the 1960s because they were inspired by McDonald's to mass produce cheap pre-formed shells to dole out as much low quality slop as possible assembly line style.
It's a lot like people asking why La Choy isn't real soy sauce.
