The amount of soda you put in a rum & coke or any HIGHBALL like that is not comparable to a half ounce of simple syrup that would go into a COCKTAIL. The sugar is too high and the dilution is too much, plus there's no bittering agent to make it rounded in flavor.
A HIGHBALL is what you drink when you're trying to mask cheap liquor.
