I have considered this, but hunting a pig would require getting a guide, gun, hunting license, etc. that's a lot more costly than just buying a whole pig (especially when I can do work trade, potentially even enough to get it for free) and I'm on a tight budget here

it really doesn't seem all that complex, all it takes is keeping the fire going, the meat turning, and being able to measure the temperature

as far as I can tell, the most used method is to cook it to a certain internal temperature, which seems safest to me, and we already have the meat thermometers

I will probably be renting whatever equipment I use (or improvising it, there are welding machines and loads of various bits of scrap metal here). not sure about barbecue sauce though, that would overpower the flavor of the meat, and not in a good way

I've been watching videos of it on youtube, and I've seen a few methods that appeal

I like the idea of marinating it heavily beforehand, but I'm not sure about the whole cage thing. it's probably a more efficient means of cooking, but the spit is so much more visually appealing

that's probably about the price the ones here will be going for, but I may be able to get that reduced through work trade

My 20th birthday is coming up, this is something I've wanted to do for a while, I may be able to get a pig at a reduced price, and I need some advice. how much does a pig typically cost? how long does it take to cook? what equipment do I need to rent/buy? if there a way a near broke guy with little cooking skill can do this?

I finally got refried beans right. just the right amount of salt, spice, and fat, when normally I add either too much or too little of at least one ingredient, throwing off the flavor just that tiny bit. also, using coconut oil instead of the traditional lard added a little hint of coconutty sweetness that truly made this dish. it may look like diarrhea, but it tastes like my first cooking success in years
