Too long, just score them and plop them in for 10-15 seconds; leaving them in boiling water for much longer results in them outside of the tomato begining to cook, which is a pain in the ass, and messy.

Anyway canned (chopped and peeled) tomatos is the way to go, but certainly quartering some fresh whole ones adds some nice flavour.
