Not always, depends on the starting dump. If there's a large and varied start dump, the thread tends to be fine. When that's the case everyone gets invested in tearing poor construction/wig/etc quality to shreds. In those cases, if a decent cosplay with good construction etc is posted they're almost always called out as nitpicks or vendettas even if the cosplayer was fat.

But when there's no start dump, there's no conversation going on, and everyone stops at the low hanging fruit of shitting on fat people.

In this thread in particular, while there's plenty of shitty in the OP pic fatty-chan is still obviously the worst cosplay. No tights, wig's the wrong length, wrong shoes, no jacket OR no correct shoulder detailing on the shirt, no pleating on the skirt, clothes don't fit, character inappropriate cosmetics, and none of it was ironed.

But since everyone's bored by lack of dump, it's easier for them to just to shout landwhale.

I feel like it can work for live action characters, but even the Overwatch characters with more realistic hairstyles have hair that looks incredibly clean with quite a bit of volume and a very specific shape that cannot be mimicked with real hair. Yea, this is what the "a wig is always better" people don't understand. bad wigs exist. Wigs require a LOT of work too. If you are actually doing stuff at a con in cosplay, then a long wig is going to tangle and look awful way quicker than your real hair. Not to mention the wig slipping and your wig cap and real hair starts to show and it just looks like a real mess.
If all you do is photoshoots, sure, always go for a wig, but going to cons? no wig is fine and can even be better.

I've seen the rhinestones work, at least. it's more of a stylistic choice, as is supposed to be reminiscent of the way the light falls onto the shoulders due to it passing through the gem's hair. Some people say it interferes with the simplicity of the design, and that's a fair criticism, but once again that's subjective. Honestly, to make the rhinestones actually look decent it's better to have smaller pieces of varying sizes while making sure they don't cover up too much surface area. It might also be better to space them out more as you get farther from the shoulders to mimic the diffusing effect of light.
