As you may or may not know I've hosted several surveys in our threads in the past. These surveys are about you, our threads and most importantly, rating the Dutch conventions. All questions on this survey are optional and all data handled anonymously. In other words if you just want to rate conventions, be my guest! The global anonymous results will be shared publicly for all to see and an infograph will be created as well. Or at least, I do believe I've paid someone a few cocktails to make one for me that isn't designed in Adobe Animate...

Well that explains a thing or two as the comic cons do feel very similar. The biggest difference I can think off is how DCC started to focus more on things for their guests to do where ACC/RCC focuses more on celebrity guests. But with both you’re still mostly just paying to get into an overpriced dealer room riddled with bootlegs. In the end the comic cons really only are as much fun as the people you’re going with.

However I am curious on what HeroesCon will be like. Based on their website it’s this weird mix of movies, games, cosplay, comics, sports, the fire brigade and music. It’s going to be interesting to see how that will work out to say the least.

There are some people posting other cosplayers their instagram/patreon pages and saying 'Oh this is so wrong!, Why does this person post so many instagram stories!? You shouldn't buy ads!' (They consider buying ads as buying likes, you can only convince people to like or follow you if your content is actually good, that is common sense)
The people who complain may put lots of effort into good costumes. But a reminder that the people that are getting complained about are having much more fun than the ones complaining themselves.

The ironic part is, the people who complain don't even unfollow them because 'their content is relevant to them or their work is good'. Then fucking unfollow them and only look at their content when you feel like it.

Did some work on Doctor Strange while my brain still tries to solve a problem with Nethergundam. The foam dowels were not entirely what I expected, though in retrospect, they were exactly what they should be.

Hahahaha same. Especially the dresses (and age) of the serie, with the purple eyes of the book. But the nice thing about GoT is that there are a lot of summaries online. With some youtube and Wikia you should have the knowledge of the average watcher and be able to hold a decent conversation.

There's no problemen in cosplaying a character if you like the design. As long as you have some basic info about the character and show. Will save you the trouble of "oh, this design is from a hentai movie?".

I'm from sweden and I'd like to visit a con in the netherlands, judging from the survey AnimeCon, Elfia and Abunai seem to be the nice ones but which one is the biggest? Is the dutch con similar to the american?

Animecon has the biggest and most high quality program, the location also allows for a lot of sleeping options, with several hotels in walking distance.

Abunai is the best example of Dutch "gezelligheid". The venue is pretty cozy and there is a very scenic bar, reminiscent of an Abbey. They are growing out of room quickly though, and getting a hold of a hotel room at the venue is really difficult each year.

Elfia doesn't focus on anime and Japanese popculture like the previous two, but is instead focussed on the (high fantasy scene). It is also held outside in castle gardens, so you better pray for good weather. Most of their program is fantasy oriented, think jousting demonstrations, folk rock bands, your typical renaissance fair. There are lots of weebs and comic enthousiasts walking around, but the focus is on people that build amazing elaborate fantasy costumes.

We also have comic cons in the Netherlands, which are a lot like their US counterparts. Big vendor halls, (semi)famous guests. However we tend to be not very keen on those. Comic cons are relatively new here, whereas J-pop conventions have been around longer. So those have set the standard with packed programs.

Wow Anon, you're out of touch. In many muncipalities people have to actually work for their bijstand (I had to) and apply to jobs every week, with a minimum of 5 a week. That's one every day. The last time I was in the Bijstand, I applied to over 200 jobs over the course of 6 months. It's not that I didn't try anon. It's very obvious you've never been in that situation, but there's nothing more soul destroying than being in a situation where you want to work, but for some reason you can't find a job, and have people like you judge all the time, thinking we don't do jack shit.

A bill is €100, but if I only have €90, I’m not going to be able to pay that bill. No job means no money either. Sell things? I barely had anything left to sell that was worth anything at all. So how do you get money? You don’t. So instead you spend it on food, clothes or other things you ‘need’.

I’m glad the Netherlands has this sytem at all. It prevents huge amounts of homelessness, suicides, and crime.

Maybe you have a point about those cosplayers and I may know some of them, but you’re not helping them by reinforcing the stigma that they’re all lazy pieces of shit that don’t do anything, because most of the time that’s far from the truth.

It’s a post from the guy who made that unofficial Dutch cosplay blacklist a while ago. He has been making a lot of these kind of posts on IG and Facebook for a while now. Making threats, telling everyone he doesn’t like to get cancer, how he enjoyed killing someone on the train and such. Someone saw enough reason to tip the police about his threats and the police took the tip seriously.

During RCC the police requested him to report at the local police station for questioning, which he did. Afterwards he changed his story to him having been arrested for planning a terrorist attack and threatened to sue the police. A few days later he did an interview with the Telegraaf but they never published his story, likely as the only thing to report was ‘Guy gets questioned after making threats on the internet’. He then started a witch hunt against the person he believed had tipped the police, how he would get sued as well and demands everyone to unfriend him. I find it odd how Viencon has been pushing the whole “we need X more bookings or the con gets cancelled” thing to begin with. Those posts truly aren’t reassuring to those having doubts on whether or not they should book a cottage. Actively offering refunds to those who already booked would also be the right thing to do here, even if it means just keeping a small group happy.

They’ve also stated that once they run out of cottages you can still rent a regular cottage at a higher price but won’t be allowed in at any Viencon events. In that case why not just sell separate “Viencon Access Tickets”? There are plenty of people who won’t purchase their tickets until the very last minute, not to mention that way day visitors could also be a thing. The more people you have at your event the more mouth-on-mouth advertising you’ll get at the next edition. Besides any additional income should get a warm welcome at this point.

Their problem is a staff group that obviously does not know what it is doing. And took the organisation of an event way too lightly. Most important part when organizing anything is being able to negotiate with a location, finances and know when you can expect tickets to sell.

I'm wondering why they organized it on the exact same way as the first attempt. They changed nothing on the formula or type of promotion. Yet they still expected a different outcome.

If any of the staff is reading this, here are some friendly hints.

Change the name. Your name is now: "we went tot the pool once and made a joke, now you can be part of that joke"

Make the event attractive for non-cosplayers. So that x can come with her bf/gf/friends/husband/wife.

List your events way earlier. Now you ask me to pay for a "maybe pool party" 6 months in advance. You offer nothing more.

Stop sounding so desperate, it makes me feel even more like you have no clue what you are doing. I'd be happy to help some cosplay initiative that might fail. But not with 100+ euros.

Stop making all the noob mistakes. The above list should not even exist if you would have had just one person with experience between you. Ffs, all of you have contacts, how about asking for tips. Then again, for some reason every new con does that anyway.

Try all I want? I dont care if you go or not. Everyone thinks the Viencon supporters want all the naggers to go, we dont. We just disagree at about 50% of the reasoning the people against Viencon have. So read up, this is about why I want to go and not to convince you: So at least you agreed the location is good, that already had most people I know, everyone who does want to go knows it will get better after the first try. You are right about the program it has alot less stuff, But (for me) it only has stuff I actually would visit at other cons, it misses all those things in its program which I dont care about: the gaming compos (meh), and 90% of the newbie workshops. (Probably alot more of those programs will be added, it was already stated, Yes the program is growing btw) I do like the Cosplayers and they have some of the most famous cosplayers (Reika) coming to judge and alot of the better cosplayers from NL are coming as well. And stop comparing the price its still cheapest convention when you want to stay for the entire weekend. With the exception that it doesnt have daytickets ofc. But we dont match on that opinion either. Or are you the one trying to convince me not to go? I can tell you know I wont change my opinion either. And btw netiher should you. (Friendly tone)

On a very friendly tone: without a program (let's at least agree that 3 compos, a photography workshop and 4 cosplayers is not much of a program), little commercials and no history or even people involved in organizing conventions, there is not much that tells me to spend 100+ Euro and my weekend on.
It is not about being against Viencon, just about this entire board wishes them well. It is just that they seem intend of begging people to buy tickets, while they did not offer much clue as what to buy tickets for.
As for the guests. Well, it is nice that Mitzuki got Viencon to pay for some friends to fly over, but Reika has been in the Netherlands three times by now, and TaeYeon is even here this Animecon for the third time.

That is, at the end, what we are discussing here. The organization failed to make a case for enough people to go, points for the case have been discussed here extensively, and no matter how much you can say they do great work, missing this many reservations is a fact. Is Viencon a nice idea, yes. Was there even a remote chance to be succesful with what has been done so far? Not before penguins can walk comfortably in hell.

Agreed, and actually no, I agree they didnt do great at all. The concept was good and so was the location. Most things done were ok. They should have put more efffort into it imo. I still supported the idea, because hey, a bungalow with many cosplay peeps. So some of my friends wanted to go. It was enough for me. Too bad.. Lets see what happens next. Whats gonna happen after the talks? I have no idea, im not happy go lucky. Although it may seem that way. Im not. Even if the majority was 70/30 Centerparcs has the end verdict. In the end they actually already failed CP

The studying in Japan one? Honestly if you want to study in Japan, you either gotta be fortunate enough to have rich parents (especially for high school exchange, that costs like 10000 euros and has an age limit of 17), have extreme luck with a scholarship, or study something that's bound to have 1-semester or 1 year exchange options. Looking at what that person did in Japan (studying at both a high school and university), I really wonder if it isn't just another person with rich parents. I guess I kind of sound like a hater, but coming from a poor family I'm just bitter I never had the luxury to do a high school exchange in Japan (despite really wanting to do that as a teen).

That's only if Viencon holds up to their shuttle bus promise. Otherwise you'll have to take the train to station Horst-Sevenum, hop on a belbus to America and go on a 2.5km walk. That or you'll have to take a cab from the station directly to the park.
