Now is a good time to check to see if you still have your rooms confirmed with your host hotel because this is when some hotels start charging credit cards. If its expired then they will drop your room without notice. One of my friends found this out the hard way when he tried to check into the Marriott only to be told his reservation was canceled.

There's an overwhelming number of things to do.

http://www.dragoncon.org/?q=fan-tracks-view

Pick two or three of your favorite genres. As schedules come out, use those as a backbone to planning things, then branch out for onsies and twosies.

The aquarium is pretty neat if you've never been there. Even fan tracks you don't like might have a cool panel or event. Artists, Art, and General merch are in separate places with huge amounts- pace yourself.

The dealer's room(s) are legit overwhelming, but worth checking out. The parade is always fun to watch, but make sure you get there pretty early, tons of normies turn out to watch it as well. Like someone else said, find a few tracks that you're interested in and try to make it to a few of those panels. Go by the Marriott lobby in the evening to see some of the best cosplays on the floor. I love Dragon Con, going for my third year now. My main plan is to go to everything in the urban fantasy track, and mix in whatever covers GoT, Cosmere-related things, and a bit of military sci-fi when I want something fresh. There's panels almost 24/7, lots of other activity, great cosplay to see, decent food nearby, and the layouts make sense once you get used to it. My main issue is queue management for some of the really popular big-room things, but the main tip there is "bring a sun umbrella and be prepared to wait".

People always say there are hookups but it's just like any other event. 98 percent of the people there just want to con and are with significant others/friends or are too old to care. Ive been to tons of parties and such but most of it is just adults getting drunk.

There are a lot of people who just come to party and aren't really hardcore nerds. I'm sure there are slutty girls and boys in this group but it's 70,000 people. Of course some people are going to hook up.

But, if you have no game and couldn't meet a girl at a bar, I don't think your chances are going to be drastically better. Also, a lot of females at cons are on constant guard anyway because of creepers. People are super friendly, but if you try to hit on a really hot cosplay girl it will probably not end well for you.

Just my 2 cents.

I get a really close parking spot to the Marriott for like ~$20 all day. Yeah you might hit a pocket of traffic on the way in but it's not a big deal because you'll only be doing it once in the day. I always leave for home around ~2am so getting out isn't painful at all.

if you can have fun at large events, you will certainly be able to have fun at dragoncon.

It's pretty damn diverse, plenty of people of all types, overall it's pretty well balanced.

I would say Dragoncon leans older than your average con.

How do you think SDCC a rich person con? I don't understand what you mean by that.

Dragoncon can get pretty expensive ($130 tickets at the door), expensive local hotels, etc.. But if you're a local it can be very reasonable.

I would suggest getting some nerdy shirts or a simple 'closet' cosplay, helps make you more approachable.

California native and 10 year SDCC vet that wants to hit up D*C sometime. SDCC is getting the reputation of being a 'rich persons con' because of the entire con environment. Lines for everything, but you can cut the lines of many off-site items by paying. Exorbitant prices for food and lodging. $250 for a 4day plus preview night. People selling their Hall H line spots. Fake wristbands were sold this year.

I flew down from NorCal and between hotel, transportation and badge I was out a grand before food and merch were considered. That's not atypical for a weekend + 1-2 days vacation, but considering you might get into 4-6 larger panels in that time, it's not exactly a bargain for what you actually get to do (stand in line, mostly).

I would say more accurately SDCC is a 'connected persons con', if you are in the right circles you can do a lot of shit. My friend does that but it's like an endless stream of social networking I couldn't handle if I wanted to.

Ahh..

DragonCon is a shit show for highly sought after panels, everyone waits in lines together for hours lol.

Panels aren't really a focus for most people at DCon though. DragonCon isn't about getting to see exlusive X first.

Just a lot of open drinking/hanging out in common areas which may translate to room parties if you're so inclined/social enough.

Hotels are insanely expensive, but if you're willing to taxi in from a reasonable distance it's not bad.

As for food, are there not nearby places to eat at SDCC? I mean I guess you could say food at DCon can be pricey, but there are plenty of surrounding options that you can go to instead of getting the stuff at the convention itself.

>>9590292
That's a relief. Exclusive con merchandise and corporate entities using the convention as a self-hyping announcement venue are part of what turned SDCC into the clusterfuck it is now.

How crazy are we talking about for hotels?

As for food, places near SDCC have tailored their prices to adjust, so you'll see advertisements for a $15 combo of burger, chips and soda. Sit down restaurants in the Gaslamp are that much at least. If you fight through the crowds for 5 or 6 blocks it gets ok. That's because from the SD convention center, you are blocked from the south (water), east (train depot), west (hotels). Only real option is north, into the Gaslamp district. So they know you're fish in a barrel.

I don't think the host hotels have any rooms left, but it'll run you about $500 a night if you're looking to grab on for next year.

>> No.9590563

>>9590556
that's actually more expensive than San Diego, damn. Then again, host hotel basically means you just take the elevator down to the con.

I'm guessing room stuffing is basically mandatory? After splitting a room between 3 people for SDCC I paid a hair over $100/night, I could handle $125 split 4 ways for the added convenience.

The Marriott rooms, at least, are TINY. We do five and I wouldn't want a sixth unless that person was small and packed super light.

Dcon is a vacation for a lot of people so they save up and budget more than a regular con. Part of the whole deal with general congoers being older

>> No.9590766

>>9590563

That's $500 a night if you're looking for a host hotel that's the actual convention hotel.

Are you telling me you found hotels for SDCC that were less than half a mile away from the convention for $300/night?

LIke I mentioned earlier if you're willing to go out a bit and Uber in, it can become very feasible.

Haha, true. It would be a vacation-ish con for me, though being older also means I don't wanna room stuff like when I was in college/early 20s.

>>9590766
Half a mile away was in the same range when I looked (Andaz San Diego) but that was last minute and non-lottery. The lottery hotel rates were under $500/night. I didn't get into the closest ones, so I don't know the rates at the Hilton Bayfront, Marriott Marquis and Omni (the three closest). Personally i stayed at one a bit over 1 mile away and took the con shuttle. 279/night, plus fees was a bit over 300. 2 queen beds plus a pullout sofa.

What's it like in the nearest non-host hotels?

Brother just stay the hell away from the place and use Marta. 24h parking is cheap and it rolls right up to the place

Look up the Omni, it is about $262 per night. It is the farthest within reasonable walking distance (about a 15 min walk) without needing a taxi. Thats where buddies and me are staying.

I'm going in under the assumption that you want to hotel that's close to the host hotels. Unfortunately, every hotel in immediate walking distance around the host hotels is either sold out or will get you for $350+ a night unless you have cheat codes to get a better rate.

As for best non host hotel? Any spot that has a free breakfast buffet.

What the fuck? I'm at Hyatt paying $238 a night.

I would never trade a lower cost for the convenience of being in a host hotel. The one year we got booted from the Hyatt for overbooking was the worst. Lost ~1 hour in shuttle rides every time we needed to go back to the room. I dread this happening again, but I know every year it's a possibility.

>>9592707
Do you really think there's a lot of people staying in host hotels that don't have badges? I don't think they block out the whole thing for Dragon because of foosball weekend but I'm not sure how big of a problem that is.

The hotels aren't full because no congoers are stealing rooms or whatever. Maybe back in 2006 but not anymore. They're full because 60k people attend this damn convention

No I just mean I stayed in the Marriott once which was nice being right in the middle of the con. The only issue was once I wanted to go back to my room, it's like a 30 minute wait behind people that literally ride the elevators for fun.

Because lol XD so randum I guess.
Got to the point where the hotel staff was kicking people off the elevator once it reached the top or bottom floor. Maybe they've got it under control now but I prefer the Hilton for a shorter wait getting up.

Haha my life is hell in away but great in others i guess. I had to work the day most of the hotels opened reservations. 3 were booked solid by the time I got home, but not the Marriott.

Does no one ever think to take the stairs??? They're always empty or near-empty and I get to my room 500% faster than if I were to wait for an elevator. Obviously, not everyone can use them with disabilities and such but just about all of us each own two working legs.
