A lot of people on LM will even let you do a payment plan.

What part do you not understand about how the clothing looks compared to the person wearing it?

I'm only talking about her clothing. Not her. There are other people here talking about her, sure. But not me. Her dress is a fake. Also that print isn't even that expensive anymore. It's old and you can get it cheap second hand like many other people are saying.

I don't give a fuck what is going on in her life. My point is that if I know better than to buy garbage, then that isn't a high standard to hold someone to.
Lolita is a hobby about standards. There's a reason the term ita exists.

I would have gone easy on her except for the replica. If that had been the real thing, this would be a nitpick and not ita. She does need to do something more with her hair and make it look less fried. Redken also isn't expensive and their hair repair formula works.
And those bunny ears are trash. Sorry, but they look uneven and maybe even poorly handmade. She has potential for sure, but she's not there yet and she needs to learn how to save money to buy things.

also you don't have to wear burando. Taobao has nice original lolita dresses too that are not that expensive. Replicas can be like 60-80 USD. That could've gone to something better.

Severe depression anon here.
Depending on the severity - possibly. My house is a wreck and I hate it, but I lack the motivation to even do things I like, let alone housework. But I wouldn't dare post a picture of my house anywhere online, fuck that. I take care of my clothes but that's all the upkeep that I have really. I never leave the house, so I end up just dressing in frills just to sit on my computer or lay in bed on my phone and shitpost. I've got a minefield of cardboard boxes from various brand orders just scattered around the house that I always tiptoe over.

I don't even have the motivation to get food most of the time so I eat maybe 1 small meal a day; my caloric intake probably totals to like 780-1000 a day. I'm constantly hungry but my lack of motivation from depression far outweighs the natural drive for my own survival. That's how deep it pulls me down.

So, possibly. Maybe. Not seeking pity, I know I'm a piece of shit, but I own it. Just putting it out there as a possible explanation. At a certain point, you just look at the mess and decide to start cleaning but don't even know where to fucking start. You'll think of maybe hiring a cleaning service but be to embarrassed at the thought of anyone seeing your mess and also paranoid that they'd throw out something you need (because you will undoubtedly be missing important stuff in your pigsty that you'll eventually find after you kick a box over accidentally).

I never thought about getting a cleaning service, I'm sure they've seen worse and maybe if you take a little time to get valuables out of the way, it would be worth it. I constantly create this extreme pit of I can't try anymore; I'm lucky to have a fiance who is willing to clean up some of it from time to time when he knows I'm having a harder day. The clean slate/room is really motivating, but then it ends up going back to how it was before sooner or later because the motivation to take care of myself is rarely there, same goes for feeding myself. Because of this I rarely have people come into my home.

I wish I could hug you anon. There are good and bad days. I hope that we can both figure out a situation that pulls us out of the funk.

For me, my mess is a direct reflection of my mental state. Spotless rooms cause me anxiety, when my anxiety is worse the mess grows, and I can't motivate myself to clean it up except for rarely. When I moved my room was so bad that when I tried to start packing, i just looked around at the mess, had a panic attack, and hid under my desk (the only clean area in my room at that time) with the cat. I cried myself to sleep under there and napped for an hour or two and then called my best friend to come and direct me because I straight up couldn't do it on my own.

So, I'm a dude who wandered in here out of boredom, and I don't understand how some of these girls can let themselves go out the way they do. Oh yeah, I totally get that. My point was more that a lot of these girls in particular, and others like them, could make themselves look 10 times better by putting on a wig.

Also I think wearing lolita every day (which I think is fucking awesome, by the way) in a way makes it easier to use natural hair, because you can keep a style that makes sense for lolita and always look good. The problem for somebody who only wears it once in a while is that a lot of lolita-appropriate styles might not work with their everyday style and it's impractical to have a style that only works two days out of the month, if that makes sense.

Yeah, that makes sense. I kind of undersold my background too - I'm an ex-cosplayer, a photographer, and somebody who's reasonably into fashion, and I've absorbed a decent bit about lolita from years on /cgl/ and in the con community, so I'm not like some walmart jeans football bro or something. Still, though, my point was basically that I'm an outsider and find it weird that people who are into the hobby understand basic things about it less than I do.

Some people just don't seem to "get it" when it comes to having a sense of style. It might not be as difficult as some other things but some people are just not inclined to be good at it? Like not everyone has a talent for singing, or sports...but to a degree it can be taught and improved with constant practice, and I think that's what she's doing here even if it's going at a glacial pace. Good for her, I say. Maybe she'll start doing make-up next, even if it takes her another year to get started with it.

I was thinking that something along the lines of an older Victorian gentleman or maybe a stylized butler kind of thing - something along the lines of a younger Sebas from Overlord (pic related) - would suit my face and build well and look good alongside Lolita and more traditional Aristo, if done tastefully.

I'm in my 30s and the best way I can describe my look is "young college professor in a movie," so "dashing military officer/rogue" and the common dandy-inspired stuff won't work for me.

Well, that said, there are a LOT more examples, in many different genres and on many types of people, of how to do lolita right. With trying to do a male equivalent you're basically blazing new ground if you're anything but a lanky semi-effeminate Japanese man. The line between cool and cringe is razor thin, and there are plenty of examples of the latter to avoid but very few good ones to get inspo from.

Were I a girl I could lurk around and find good pictures of coords done by girls who looked similar to me, and use them as advice. As a guy, though, all I can find with people who look anything like me are neckbeards in top hats.

i think this was from lanvin's 2009...fall?...menswear collection. you may have better luck trying to find historically-inspired garments from western brands.
also, don't feel like you have to stick strictly to 'aristocrat' to be accepted by lolitas. mori men fit the 'college professor' look you described early much better imo. i'd rather see someone try something creative and look bad than see another one of those sad 'failed las vegas stage magician' looks that so many guys seem to think count as ouji.

Lel that's rich coming from someone who thinks this is about her. We weren't discussing super poor people obviously, the conversation stemmed from people blowing money on shitty quilting fabric to make skirts when they could have saved up for brand which ultimately would be cheaper if they were just patient.
