Rape culture is a really awful term to use, plus it describes the situation at hand pretty badly. I don't know if she has ever experienced/knows someone who has experienced sexual assault or rape, but it happened to at least 3 of my friends this year alone and it's far more serious than someone just asking to have sex with you and having a public temper tantrum if you say no, or refusing to send your stuff back to you.

Way back before the Nadia model, someone on a cosplay comm posted a story. She said her friend had been one of the previous winners and came back telling stories of Mr Yan sexually harassing her. What really kicked up controversy is that she said he also threatened her by saying that since she was a Bodyline customer, he had her real name and address on file, so whatever he did to her, she had better not tell anyone. So this was a pretty serious threat, coming from an older man towards an underage girl who was alone in a foreign country. On the other hand, this girl adamantly refused to come forward, so we don't even know if she's real. The person telling the story was a cosplayer, not a lolita, so no one can figure out why a cosplayer would step in to tell this story, other than to warn other underage lolitas not to join the competition.

The competition itself (when it still ran) was always skeevy anyway, the criteria tended towards someone foreign but small-sized. The winners all tended to be underage, and since the prize only covered flight and hotel for winner herself, so basically it's some young girl who is alone and helpless in a foreign country.

This alone wouldn't be so bad without Nadia's story -- she won the competition the same time the cosplayer was putting out the warning story, and she went with both her father and brother (iirc). So keep in mind this girl is probably the only model who was NOT alone and helpless in a foreign country. And she still received a rather skeevy marriage proposal. It does make you wonder whether some other shit would have gone down if she'd gone alone.

I think BL actually picked Venus so that she can tell everyone she wasn't sexually harassed (and it backfired because she needs the views for her YT channel), but I wouldn't brush aside Mr Yan being a pedo creeper all that easily.

The body pillow was always a tacky joke to me, but someone on 4chan started that petition, so I guess that's expected.
