What's the best way to store rectangle headdresses? I was keeping them flat in a box, stacked on top of one another, but it becomes a massive pain when you want one on the bottom and have to arrange them all again.

Wouldn't they get creased from folding though? That's why I keep them flat.

I'm sure I've seen some sort of tie organizer or something where they fold like that but won't get creased because there's a fairly wide cylinder for them to wrap over rather than making a sharp crease, but when I google "tie organizer" and the like I don't find what I'm looking for.

Well I was going to ask how important is Japanese culture in lolita? Someone in another thread got upset because I said I didn't have any interest in Japanese culture outside of J-fashion and I don't watch anime really outside of Ghibli, I don't like jrpg's, I just don't do anything that most people into this stuff do apparently. (have talked to a lot of random lolitas on skype and kik that fucking loved rpg's and mmo's)

Isn't it possible to just like j-fashion without liking the other things attached to it?
I mean I have three brand dresses in my closet already, why would that mean I should learn to speak Japanese??

>> No.8883545

>>8883541
I'm the exact same way I have no interest in Japanese culture outside of lolita and the only anime I've watched outside of Ghibli are Pokemon and Dragonball Z only because that shit was inescapable in the 90s/00s.

>> No.8883547

>>8883541
>how important is Japanese culture in lolita?
it depends on how much you want to understand or be involved with the fashion. you can like the dresses without caring about where they come from or in what context they were developed. just be aware that more informed lolitas may have a clearer picture of what "lolita" is and you may need to defer to the opinions of those who are more involved with the roots of the fashion.

>> No.8883573

>>8883547
Right and I get that, but obviously I'm interested in their subculture just not their normalfag culture so to speak. I know where the dresses come from and read up on how street fashion works - if I recall correctly stuff like AP has been around for ages but street fashion happened to cross over with them at some point and that harajuku thing just became popular eventually and because it literally started on the street, it's really hard to pinpoint who exactly started it. Which makes sense, you don't always get to document who starts a trend.

I feel like I'm pretty informed about lolita without being all "JAPAN IS SO ANCIENT AND AMAZING AND THEIR HISTORY OMG" I don't care about that stuff. I care about people walking around in the street wearing fucking meta and posing with Minori. That's the part I want to be informed about.

>>8883545
>the only anime I've watched outside of Ghibli are Pokemon and Dragonball Z only because that shit was inescapable in the 90s/00s.
So true. I only managed to not get involved in it because I was a Jehovah Witness and grew up in pretty much a sect of it that was a god damn cult and missed out on all normalfag culture that happened in the 90's/early 00's. The only reason I even knew that stuff existed was because they put an article in one of their magazines about how Sailor Moon was some kind of devil cartoon.

You have no idea how fucking disappointed I was when I finally saw an episode of Sailor Moon...

>> No.8883584

oh man Anon I wasn't allowed to watch 'Sailor Moon' in the early 90's because it was evil but I think my Mum pretty much knew she was beaten when Poke'mon hit our shores. You know, I didn't know that until later on either. I think this happened to a lot of people because I remember seeing bits and pieces of the cartoons and everyone was always watching it in english and I just never thought of it, and I don't think the other kids did either.
Though when I did find out it was Japanese everything made sense.

Interesting, because Dragon Ball was originally loosely based off "Journey to the West," a classical novel from China. Funnily enough, the kanji for "Son Goku" is the same as "Sun Wu Kong," the main character in the story (he is also called the monkey king in the novel, which is the reason why he has a tail in the manga/anime.)

I identify with this so much. My dad was always controlling, physically violent and emotionally/psychologically abusive. My mother was the churchgoer although she was moderate. When he suddenly decided to jump on the bandwagon he used the church to gain status/demonise his wife for leaving him/guilt me for existing/to exert AUTHORITY.

We threw out ALL secular music and most of the books/DVDs if there was any mention of magic or myth. I was majorly into Pokemon and had collectibles brought back from Japan as gifts from a friend of the family- most of those went. When I was 15 I bought the Hollaback Girl single and Honey on DVD the first time I ever got to go to a store unsupervised to spend my own money... Immediately yelled at, they were confiscated and sold on eBay. He kept the money.

When I was 19 I went away with my mother, he turned my room upside down, threw out hundreds worth of shit, dug condoms (had just met my first and only bf online) out from my underwear drawer and left them on my desk on top of a bible for me to see when I got home. Mortified.

I'm forever on edge in case he walks in on us watching something with any kind of suggestibility or a swear word slips out (although I've caught him watching some vulgar content) If my mother and I were watching something we'd be listening for the door every minute, he'd come in and just lurk in the doorway growling until we got the message. This 43 year old woman hid a Twilight DVD from him so she could have escapsim time. Now she's left the country and I'm stuck with him. I'm 23 now but try to be subtle with the Pokemon shit I spent a lot of money getting back.

I still feel like a devil child. We threw out a beautiful set of Narnia books because they were 'demonic' then I ended up buying one for my bf's mother for Christmas as she loves them; she's a VICAR and thinks they're ok.

I could understand not getting that as a kid, but it's kind of one of the big reasons that it got pushed on me as a kid. It was 'fantasy', but 'Godly' fantasy. we were threatened with losing Christmas many times because of its pagan roots and lack of Biblical support as a holiday. Easter was "Resurrection Day" and bunnies outlawed.

Independent Fundamental Baptists are fun people. but they also helped shape my fashion aesthetic: except for its frivolity, wastefulness, and shameless individuality, lolita is a modest fashion. i grew up in jumperskirts basically, every sundress needed a shirt underneath and bare legs above the knee weren't allowed.

Hahaha

But I get what you mean.

I haven't known that many fundamentalists beyond a few Mormon families and JW families that I grew up near. And even then, the Mormon family stayed pretty low-key for the most part. Their kids weren't allowed out on Sundays, for example. And none of the girls were allowed to cut their hair (though I think that may have been just their family and not so much religious as the father being controlling).

If you can't find anything similar enough that it's not noticeable, and it's in somewhere obvious like the bodice, you can remove a button from a different part of the dress which is less seen (like the cuffs or something), sew that where the missing one was and replace the one you removed with something that's close but not an identical match.

If there are no buttons that won't be obvious if they're missing, you might have to remove and replace all the buttons.

I feel you, anon. My background wasn't scarring - I actually had a really fun childhood - but I missed out on a lot of the 90s pop culture stuff because we didn't have a TV, and my parents were a mixture of too poor and too eco-friendly to buy me the plastic toys everyone coveted (and I mostly went along with this and thought the toy fads my classmates got into were stupid). The entire 90s nostalgia thing my generation are so into is based around stuff I never experienced, or didn't watch until I was in my late teens.

Try to go with the mentality of enjoying the food, location etc and practicing polite conversation rather than making new best friends straight away. It's easy to deal with all the social stuff just by being polite and asking people about themselves - you're not going to be able to tell who you'll get on with best after only one meet anyway. In my comm people tend to add each other on Facebook only after they've met IRL at meets. Once you've friended people you can see from the sort of stuff they post who you have common interests with and who's a loon you're better to avoid.

>> No.8884612

>>8884586

Damn anon, I feel you so much there. My childhood was sheltered and was even more stereotypically 'Asian' (no vidya, limited TV, and math minute every. fucking. day.) vs. other asian peers my age. It wasn't like I was scarred in the end but it makes it quite hard for me to connect to people my age because my lame teenage rebellion is not about getting drunk at 14 or nearly getting arrested but how I snuck out to animu club.

I also hardly get pop culture references. I got into pokemon way too late for the elementary crowd and way too early for the rejuvenation it got right after I graduated HS. I was slow to catch onto things. Because I couldn't watch TV I don't get Friends references or Seinfeld jokes.

I get by but I can tell that people think I'm a little odd. It's not something I admit to in daily life but sometimes I feel isolated because of that. I don't want to be a snowflake - I just wish I fit in better because that's all I really want.

Gulls, I need help. I apologize if this isn't the best thread to ask.
I am a relatively fit and slim person, but I suffer from really bad, flabby back fat/excess skin on my back, mostly just from just below my shoulders to right around my hips. This normally isn't too much of a problem in lolita. However, I recently purchased a compression/sports bra to help bring my overall bust measurement down by a cm or two in order to fit into a dream dress I recently acquired (Moitie's Small Flower Embroidery OP). It worked fine and looks much better from the front, but the bra (like most sports bras I've owned) somewhat digs into and accentuates my back fat, making it visible through the back of the dress. I don't know what to do.
I work out already and am about 47kg at 160cm, so not fat. I've always had issues with back chub, even when I was much thinner, but I've mostly been able to hide it. This was the final straw for me, though, and I want to figure out if there's anything I can do to get rid of it. Is there anything other than surgery that I can really do? Any workout or workaround advice would be greatly appreciated.

Apart from that I got my HMHM and Dear Celine items just fine, even if it took nearly 4 months.

>> No.8884691

I've been professionally measured and measured myself using the bra guide that's floated around here/tumblr/reddit and am definitely a 70D. Normal bras never give me an issue, but full support bras tend to be a bit tighter (probably out of necessity) in my experience.
Also, the back fat/skin is present and grab-able even when I'm totally naked, and it even scrunches up into slight rolls if I lean back and to one side, so this isn't a case of breast tissue that's moved or the bra creating a problem that's not already there.
I honestly feel like I have the layer of fat that a lot of women get on their stomach but on my back; my front side is flat and taut like a fucking board.

>> No.8884705

>>8884691
I am convinced that's long term breast tissue migration. I had armpit/back flab when I was fucking anorexic and am still getting it all back into a bra. >> No.8884708

It's not armpit flab and is not only at chest level, though, anon; it goes from right around my shoulder blades to all the way down to my lower back, right above my butt, pretty evenly dispersed all across my back accept for the very center at my backbone. It's also been this way since I was young (~middle school), and swoop and scoop has had little effect on my cup size (went from a C to a D) since I was first properly measured about two years ago. And yes, I've remeasured every couple of months since then.

Have you tried pilates exercises designed to help tone back muscles? Improving the underlying muscle structure might help with the loose appearance.

It's gone in both directions imo. You can post replicas on here and usually people won't say anything, whereas previously the entire thread would derail into replica debating and then shitposting. Which explains why people don't bother jumping on replicas anymore, they don't want yet another derailed thread.

However, I've noticed a new trend where people jump on two things that look slightly alike and accuse them of being "replicas". Few threads ago someone said a taobao purse that looks similar to an AP purse is a non print replica, and in the otome thread someone accused Hello Bones of copying Pep Fox. That's not really how replicas work. A replica is an exact copy, and we hate them for pretending to be the original. If someone is just taking ideas and then making their own thing, even if it looks somewhat like the original, that's not a replica. Goddamn, we're not going to have any original prints left if idiots keep saying a fricken **idea** is off limits just because another brand thought of it first.

at comm meets, no one asks about my life or talks to me unless i start a conversation with someone, and even then they are happier to talk about themselves and to each other. i drink my tea and try to be friendly and responsive but i can see on their faces when i talk that they are confused about why i am there.

>why don't you fucking listen
i am sorry for not communicating this well, but my position right now is that i am only able to listen and respond to others. at meetups, i do not have opportunities to contribute beyond responding quickly to what others say (i am talked over or not even looked at). outside of meetups, i am a low priority to those i consider friends.

i think the response my question has gotten drives home that there is something fundamentally different between me and others. it is not normal for friends to move far away without saying goodbye. it is not normal to be left out of communal gatherings. since i am not an ugly ita, i figure i must be too awkward or dull or offputting to be worth any consideration.

this being 4chan, i am sure there are other lolitas who have struggled to fit in socially at meetups. if you could give me the benefit of the doubt, and trust that any self-centeredness you read from me is because of momentary sadness and longterm isolation from others, advice toward becoming someone other people want to be close to would be appreciated.

Okay. Maybe you need like..social skills 101. You realise you have to give something back to actually make that connection right? People want you to listen, but to keep them engaged you need to find things in common or other interests you share beyond lolita. It's not just enough to sit quietly, listen, and give generic responses, you need to pick up on what common interests you have or things you can talk about together. It's pretty damn normal to be left out of a group that already knows each other if you aren't putting in effort to fit in.
One example might be someone talking about how much they like cookie prints and what they're planning to buy next. Rather than just being like "oh yeah me too they're cute" you use it as an opening to ask about other things like "I don't really wear sweet prints but I like baking, do you bake at all?" If they don't bake, then maybe ask about favourite bakeries, or recommend a bakery/cafe in the area (which can lead to "if you like cookies you HAVE to try this new flavour" or "we should totally go to this cafe in a couple of weeks, let's plan something") and so on and so forth. If that avenue doesn't get anything, you try another tack - maybe talking generically about troubles you have with AP release bloodbaths or asking if they own a different print with cookies/if they have seen it before, and then you continue to find other points of connection.
The trouble comes if you're a more boring person with few interests who can't actually talk about many things. I don't usually run into many topics where I can't at least ask a generic question and then get the person talking, but in that case you can say "well I don't know much about that, but I'd like to hear" and actually listen for those points where you can ask a decent question which shows you're listening.

>> No.8887480

>>8887313
Have you done something in the past that could cause them to be cold to you? Are you a good listener during conversation or do you come off as the kind of person who makes conversation just so you can talk about yourself? I've been in a lot of one sided friendships line this where I played psychiatrist for my "friends." After a while I realized I invited them to talk about themselves so often, that that's what they expected. I felt like a self centered twat for trying to drive the conversation towards me, but I felt like an idiot for letting them go on about themselves. My advice to you is to cut your losses and see if you can find new friends to practice balancing a conversation with. It should be share, receive, share, receive. If you feel like the conversation is staying too long on a subject, try to find a way to drive it to something else so you can add your input, feelings, ideas, past experiences, what have you.

Honest question, are you just socially awkward or do you have special needs?

Hi /cgl/!

I used to frequent here years ago, but not for lolita. I was always here for Cosplay. I live in South Korea as an English teacher, and I was looking for ways to spice up my wardrobe.

I was like. . . skirts. Skirts because the summers in Korea are not to be fucked with. So I started going onto gmarket, I went to a few of the markets, shopped around.. . and I did not like the styles I was seeing.

But then through some internet searching, I found Lolita skirts!

I fell in love with just the skirts. They're perfect for me. It's love at first sight. The problem is I'm not quite sure where to start.

I found some skirts on these websites:

lolitashow.com
my-lolita-dress.com
. . . and a place called closet child.

I think the last one is reputable, but I don't know about the other two.

I'm trying to wrestle taobao into cooperating, but I know how to read Korean, not Chinese.

Any advice for somebody who's just fallen in love with the skirts?

Pic unrelated.

Question for everyone. If you could go back in time, and get only 1 dress during the release, what dress would it be? Why?

Personally it would be the Honey Cake Special Set in Ivory, since I have Honey Cake Yoke JSK and I just love the special set cut so much more.

It's doesn't keep me up at night, but I do like it. If there was a re-release/MTO I feel like it would be a Holy Lantern sort of situation. But if I could go back in time and get it during the original release, hell yeah. I would wear it a fuckton of times and then sell it for $1500.

Other than that, most of my dream dresses go for around retail or only a little higher so eh.

Wow. Complete turnaround from just a few months back when newbies would bash on sweet lolita for being childish, vow never to be seen in public wearing sweet, bitch that sweet lolitas are what's giving the fashion a bad rep for being freaky, then turn around and proceed to post OTT frilly sweet in both the classic lolita and gothic lolita threads.

Noice. I was super tempted to get the white/red but the black fit in my wardrobe better and was more me, although I wouldn't hesitate to buy the white/red if I saw it secondhand and had the funds! I have one of their other JSK's in this cut from a different series and I wore a bell-sleeved blouse with it to kinda have that kimono feel. But I like the blouse Misako is wearing with this jsk in the preview pics too.

It's just a second strap, meant to be worn on top of the shoulder with the first one.
Whoever put it on the dress form had no clue what they were doing or were trying to show off the lace

Are you sure? it looks deliberate, like it's supposed to be off the shoulder, from the way it's sewn on the side so far away from the other strap. Meta has pieces with straps like this, pic related.

I highly doubt that by how it's been sewn in. Maybe you don't know what you're talking about.
