The only color that is jarring is the umbrella being teal/gold. The overall design color reads as purple-grey. The colors are almost entirely on the blue-red spectrum. The either needed to change the blue stripes to teal to incorporate secondaries (though the reds/pinks would need to go orange to look okay). The umbrella needs entirely new colors. The gold is supposed to be a small accent, so it looks terrible on the umbrella. The teal breaks the analogous colors. It's mainly primaries, (purple is reading warm grey rather than true purple) and there is no orange, so using any secondaries looks bad. Umbrella could have been that purple-grey, blue, (or clear if they could draw it) Design wise, detail colors should not be incorporated as main colors else it looks tacky/matchy-matchy or just odd. It loses complexity. Sometimes doing so works as it creates a childish feel (So a pink colorway in lolita having brown large details and tiny ivory details, right? Brown will look matchy, which is good for lolita. Ivory would wash out the ivory details in the print and be bad in both regular design and lolita.)

Just saying, the colors are mostly fine, it's that umbrella. Otherwise it's a matchy-matchy kid's pastel scheme. Primaries and soft tones. Except that fairly saturated teal. The whole design does read as childish, though.

I got stuck queuing outside the Kitacon bring and buy for about an hour to drop off stuff, and had to stare at this monstrosity. It's like some kind of magic eye puzzle, the more you stare the worse it gets.

I tried submitting this for Toracon waaaay back in the day because I wanted to see something besides a generic cat/tiger girl. Honestly it holds up better than I thought it would. RIT always had good art students so I'm sure whatever they used that year was fine. Only issues I ever noticed was them printing characters with white ink on black shirts when the art wasn't clearly not set up for that.

You book a huge venue in Louisiana and tell people you expect 4000 attendees your first year. For reference the longest running Anime con in Louisiana just got 5-6k after over 5 years.

The hotel bailed on their contract when they couldn't fill what had to be an enormous room block. If you go look on their Facebook page there is some gold from when the hotel dropped their asses to the point they actually cancelled.

They never refunded any artist or attendees, there was a local news spot about it. Something like "the ultimate con." It was beautiful.

2/3 of our state's anime cons are run by the same guy who always commission the same artist to draw for him. I wouldn't be so salty is he didn't promote him as a guest and talk about how amazing he is as a working professional

I think half the reason the art and designs are often shit is because:
1) the con organizers have zero sense for decent art and design
2) I doubt any of them want to pay for decent art and design if they can just get shitty ones from people who will do it for free.

This is their default design but every year they get dressed up in something related to con guests (the year we got Morita Masakazu they had their own hero suits, and they were dressed up as Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask the year we got Mitsuishi Kotono etc)
