Hey gulls. I need some advice for my planned Halloween coord. I have a black JSK with fur trim that I'd love to do an elegant classic black cat themed coord with, and I have most of my accessories worked out, but I wanted to find an elegant way to do a hat with cat ears. I wanted something with a wide witch-like brim but without the ears being too furry cat ear clips-looking. Something along the lines of those felt bowlers with the cat ears molded into them mixed with the shape of VM's hats, but I can't decide if I should just go with one of those bowler hats, or if I should try to modify my own from a hat I own already. I can do handmaking, but most of the ears I've made before were for costumes and I'm worried about the end result being too cartoony from the bulkiness of faux fur.

Anyone have any ideas as to making more elegant/slim ears to attach to an existing hat, or has maybe seen a hat that would work well for this?

Pic related, the bowler hats I'm thinking of. Most of the alternate versions of these I can find are too casual, either berets or baseball caps.

I agree with this and at the same time I don't get why OTT classic and OTT gothic turns its nose up against sweet styles for this very reason. It looks more costumey than sweet now.

That looks like the shantung(?) fabric i think? I have it in cream and it's surprisingly heavy. I haven't worn it yet but that's because I suck and wear lolita like 3 or 4 times a year. It is one of those pieces that makes you want to work harder at making an interesting coordinate.

I think the ott hate is just as ridiculous as spraypainted skewer crowns. A lot of girls wear normal coords all the time, so for events, maybe they want to go all out. Why is that a problem?
Maybe it looks "costumey," but all lolita that isn't VM with no petti looks costumey. But it's an alt fashion, so why would it not?
The designers of lolita brands always look ott af, and they have a big part in the look of the fashion.

I think a lot of the backlash comes from the way it's changed people's perceptions of what makes a coord, too. Nowadays, if you're not wearing a lot of accessories or fairly dressed up, a lot of people perceive it as "casual" when for many (especially older) lolitas, that's just a normal, perhaps even slightly dressy coord.

I saw, weeks ago, a picture of a lolita dress. It was Qi styled, from taobao, and the main colors were purple and blue; at first look I thought the dress have a galaxy print, but looking better, they were lanterns (like in Rapunzel movie)

I was so dumb I didn't save the pic or source, and now I can't find it

Somebody knows which taobao brand is selling it maybe?

Damn, stay salty. It's probably because you can't afford it. I always imagine super toned down lolita are the ones who hate this stuff, but I like both clothing for daily wear and OTT creativity. If it's for a tea party or a meet, just let people have fun. If you want to look normal fashion style and to blend in, lolita fashion isn't for you.

Went to Spirit today and saw they have a number of petticoats for $25 or less. Obviously some of them were like one or two layers of tulle and pretty short, but the "deluxe" petticoats looked really solid and nicely shaped for the price. Anytime ever bought them? It looks like it's be nice for an extra layer of poof.

Petit Fleur will begin shipping on 9/28, and they plan to ship all orders out by 10/20.

If you're not making your entire coord by hand, I'd say a cheaper coord would run $100-400, then it goes up from there. You could still make something for under $100, you'd just have to be careful.

It's not uncommon at all for coords to be in the 500-1000$ range or more.

I try to buy everything either secondhand or on sale because I'm a jew but I like burando. I typically spend $300-$400 a coord I try to get main pieces that can be used in multiple ways. I always get shoes that can be used lolita and also daily wear.

Same. Since our secondhand market is so active it's just so easy to get cheaper brand - plus so many pieces for sale have only been worn a few times so it's not even a big deal. I'm like you tho - I try to get stuff that can be used in different ways (could be worn at work, at meets, or dressed up for special events).

Posted this Halloween witch-esque coord in the help thread and had some amazing responses and help from some of you gulls (thank you)....but one question no one could seem to answer was is there any chocolate brown blouses that have princess sleeves???

I have been looking all over and while I like the blouse I chose in this coord I just feel that princess or bell sleeves are more halloween and for sure more witch....help anyone??

SO. I've been looking at purchasing Angelic Pretty's Katrina op, so I've been looking around oin lacemarket to see prices etc whatever. I've notice that in some of the completed listings, the lace on the collar of the dress is different from the stock photo? If it's your first coord (I'm assuming since you're buying a petticoat) you'll be spending more because you need the basics, but as your wardrobe grows you reuse items like blouses and shoes so you won't need to spend as much. If you're worried about spending too much then try to buy things that form a cohesive wardrobe where things can be used in multiple coords.

I guess I just figured princess sleeves seem to go better with halloween/witch coords...never done a coord with chocolate brown before and it seems to be a harder color to work around seeing as there are less options for blouses and bags.

Ill probably end up going with the blouse on my coord pic since it would just be easier. You gulls have seriously been so helpful tho!

Bracing myself for this. Personally I don't think something so costumey is appropriate for Rufflecon. It was one thing at the OTTea, and even then I think people really pushed it past the bounds of the fashion into something else. As soon as I saw the "aviary" theme I figured I'll probably get smacked in the head by someone's wings or have to avoid staring into the beady eyes of some taxidermied bird on someone's head.

I'm planning on a really simple witch outfit for my first Halloween coord. Mainly want black with red accents-- may also go into vampire-esque territory. Debating between red or black shoes, making something similar to the hat (black witch hat, red roses, some organza, a skull/bat), and I have a red bow from another dress to clasp onto the belt of the OP to maybe tie it all together.

Not sure what to do for legwear or accessories, though. Maybe some meh-tier OTT costume jewelry from ebay (like the ones in the collage), since it'll mainly just be for halloween. Any thoughts?

Also, I might have a black shawl or cardigan depending on how cold it is outside.

I think there's a question on egl from like, 2011 or something. Some egl-ers said the photos looked really good, and expected burando-tier quality rather than taobao-tier (at that time taobao wasn't all that great, they were still mostly known for churning out replicas). Angelic Pretty did a re-release of Katrina (OP and jsk), so yes, there's actually two releases. Whether they kept the same lace or not, you can check it out at lolibrary.org, they do have the two releases listed seperately and with different stock photos. (The site is lagging for me at the moment, so I didn't check the neckline closeups).

There *is* also a taobao lookalike that was made shortly after that, but I've forgotten both the dress and the shop name. You might be able to find it if you go through lolibrary's listings for onepieces from taobao released in 2015. Or hopefully someone on here can remember which taobao shop it was.

Why pretentious if it holds a lot of truth for many? Dressing up is a form of escapism/outlet for a number of people with various health issues. It's a cliche because it's a framework for helping a significant number of people cope with chronic illness.

Sure there are different outlets for everyone, but clothing has always been understood to have influence on the wearer beyond the practical - the social, cultural etc functions of clothing are well understood pretty much universal.

Commenter from above here. If you dress up as a form of self care or escapism to help deal with something that's getting you down in your life, that's obviously fine, and can be a healthy outlet. I do it too, and have a number of chronic illnesses. It turns into pretentious and self aggrandising behaviour when you take that outlet and use it as a badge of your fragility and delicate, doll like super special snowflakeness. It becomes especially obnoxious when you wave around the fact that you're ill as if it makes the fact that you wear frilly dresses deep and meaningful and worthy of a film study.

It's at that point that the above (fashion/hobby as self care) can also become a really toxic behaviour, because you'll start to alienate people around you both by harping on how special your illness makes you (and believing it), and because you start using it as a justification for bad habits. Dressing in Lolita makes you feel good when nothing else does, so buying this dress is a need rather than a want, right, even if you have to borrow money for your friend again?

It's a self-victimising mentality that I absolutely despise, probably because I've come out the other side of it, so I might be reacting strongly to seeing it portrayed as something beautiful and fascinating in the trailer.

Plus, no matter which way you look at it, using your illness as clickbait for your ego trip is beyond tacky.

I think she needs to style the wig a bit away from her face. The hair is all over her face and taking away its shape that she has.
