Why, why of all these fashions that popped up, did Dolly-kei have to vanish? It was so quirky and I liked it much more than Cult Party and similar ones that showed up around that time.

I think the problem with dolly-kei is that there's a distinct look, but there aren't enough definable rules and guidelines that people can get into it easily.

Western cult party on the other hand mutated into this disgusting pastel peignoir formula got picked up on and made into its own thing before getting consumed by other styles Larme and generic Tumblr-kei. I miss the days of extreme layering.

Another problem is that outside of Grimoire shop girls, dolly-kei doesn't seem to have much of a strong presence in the blog-o-sphere, or have e-famous people attached to the style.

I don't think it died-died, more just got absorbed by the general vintage clothing styles popular in Japan. Grimoire is still doing pretty well, even though it's very niche.

I do really miss the very elaborate and layered eastern European looks of dolly though, it was so much cooler in my mind than all the super kawaii shit.

Yes I really miss that look too. It's what really made me fall in love with dolly-kei.
Most of the Instagram photos of Grimoire just look like normal vintage clothes.

Because of the complex layering, ornate and heavy fabrics, and repurposing of vintage pieces, Dolly Kei clothing wasn't able to be mass-produced for cheap like the fashions >>8428745 mentioned.

The clothes used in fashions that stuck in the west (Western CPK, larme, toned down gyaru, 'pastel goth,' Tumblr-core animu clothes, etc.) did so in part because teenage girls could a) afford it and b) mix and match simple garments easier/without the effort that complex styles like old CPK and Dolly Kei require.

At least my 2 cents as to why we don't see it much in the West.

It requires creativity, money, the ability to modify garments and accessories, and a keen eye for what works together and what will be a cluttered mess. Whereas, a cut-and-paste pastel skirt/shirt/printed tights/shoes/wig qualifies as a passable fit in other styles.
