Off the top of my head some secondhand sites are lacemarket, closetchild, violetblue, and tokyoalice. Some lolita taobao stores that make ouji are littledipper, dear celine, r-series, infanta, and chess story. Make sure to filter out things that are out of stock to save time.
You might want to stray away from AaTP, Moitie, Boz, BPN, these brands are very nice but very expensive, and you can get nice pieces from most of the indie taobao stores for $30-50 an item. Mind you it'll be hard to find aristocrat stuff, expect to pay out the ass for that. Bodyline is a great place to get cheap blouses of different styles and colours and there's free shipping so you could get some shoes too.

Pic related will cost $60 at most for the vest and shorts, and the rest you could probably get off bodyline for ~50 or so.

I'm not feeling this coord. The brocade Roland and jabot are very formal aristo, and they make the pants seem plain. Meanwhile, the hair? wig? is fried-looking.
The boots have chains and shit, which definitely don't fit the elegant feel of the rest of the outfit, but they match whatever the fuck piercings by the mouth.
The crown looks like it's about to fall off. The can is either a prop in poor taste, without enough ornamentation to justify it, or genuinely neccessary.
Also, the only color is the jabot: there's no other red to balance it.

No shit? Where abouts? I live in Williamsburg proper. There are a metric ton of seagulls, some decent if small local cons, but a bit of a larp vacuum. You either have dicksword boffer groups like amtgard and Dag, or my numberless latex group, Lost Stories and Dark Tales. Historic recreation (both war, and civilian things like balls and gallas) are big, and of course the SCA. I am actually doing a historic demo at the Southampton Renfair this weekend with my SCA chapter and our neighbors.

Yeah, I tossed a shirt, waistcoat, coat, and neckerchief over jeans and a t-shirt, in clothing designed to accentuate your gut. It makes me look fat(ter). It is custom tailored by our costumers though, and looks good with breeches and stockings.

I think you're reaching a little here. Boz is not just worn by cookie cutter Aristo or gothic lolitas. It looks perfectly acceptable in a more punk context to me. It's not personally my cup of tea but I don't think gnarly hair, piercings and punk boots are a harsh contrast to their jackets.

Well my Wings of the Knight set came in from Dear Celine. I know someone else was planning on getting it too. The buttons are cheap, for sure, but they seem to be held on pretty well. A good thing too, there's like 20 of them and I'd hate to have to replace them.

Quality pretty good, but the fit is a bit off. I got it secondhand with a medium vest and large shorts, and the vest is tight and shorts are loose. The reverse is probably ideal for men, if you lack lady hips and waist.

And yeah, I actually lucked out and found a couple unissued USN drop-fronts in black summer weight wool at a thrift shop for $5 each, and I am in the middle of converting them into every day wear breeches. I already removed the plastic naval anchor buttons, and have started sewing the pewter ones I just cast (they need a final polishing). Next I'll modify the leg to go from a full bell-bottom to a knee buttoned leg.

Gropey, I mean this in the most serious way as someone who used to run a museum's fashion collection, for anything from the dandy eras or styles you might want to consider more foundation garments (ie, a male corset). I'm not saying tightlace or anything, but dandies prided themselves on appearing to have a boyishly fit figure and it was often accomplished by a structured smoothing vest-like corset.

what are some guidelines to follow for boystyle makeup that is not super feminine? after reading all the threads about guys not wearing makeup in cosplay, i don't wanna be a basic bitch. but lolita tutorials are too OTT for me.

First, wash your face. Put on concealer, a light powder foundation or bb cream, and maybe bronzer.
Make sure your facial hair is well groomed and your eyebrows are neat. Also, wear chapstick if you have dry lips.
For eyes, don't go for a guyliner raccoon look. Use brown or charcoal eyeshadow, pretty close to your lash color, as a liner on the top and outer bottom corner. For mascara, use brown or natural black, and only use 1 coat.
You don't need too much make up: just cover the blemishes and look hygienic, and you'll probably be fine. If you want to be more ott, figure it out yourself.

thanks for the advice, this part especially sounds worth trying. i had some black liquid liner that didn't look right, but i was going all around the eye and my lashes are lighter than true black.

also want to move on to that BJD look, which seems to use blush tones under the eyes and shadow or bronzer above.

Self-posting for an example. If you have a rounder face, contouring is your friend. For ouji I do the basic foundation, concealer, powder, then contour cheeks, nose, eye sockets, temples, really light blush, light eyeliner & mascara, fill in brows (straight if you have angled brows), and I put concealer on my lips because they're naturally really pigmented. Basically a lot of work to make it look like you're not wearing any makeup. I was going for boyish so I kept everything pretty light and natural.

i would say women have more childish features (neoteny), which makes doing youthful styles (lolita, ouji) more successful for them. feminine and youthful get conflated, which is a pet peeve of mine. boys are not feminine; girls with hips, busts, full dark lips, and other feminine features typically hide them to be "passable" at ouji.

i agree with you, just nitpicking on terminology because it skeeves me out when people associate prebuscent features with femininity.

Yeah that's why I said a smoothing garment. We're not going all Gone-With-The-Wind 16" waist here. Its like a stiffened vest that laces up. All it does is make everything straighter. Barrel shaped is fine, as long as you're a smooth barrel, ya feel?

(as an aside, I once had to fit models for a photoshoot using antique garments. the only model who could fit into the 1820-era uniform we had was my ftm friend, who is all of 5'2" and has a 22" chest and still slightly feminine figure)
