Considering they cancelled last year (with no explanation as to why) It's going to be interesting how bad it's going to be.

Smaller conventions (unless planned by people who actually know what they are doing (hint: most of them do not (i.e dashcon))) tend to be very risky to go to. Sure they need to start somewhere but if your paying for a hotel and a con ticket and it's bad you've just wasted your money.

Looking through the official photo gallery (http://www.flickr.com/groups/amecon/pool/)) 99% of them are taken outside. Where are the inside pictures?

Somebody who browses /cgl/ and is going better take some pictures of amecon and post them here. It'll be interesting to see if it's bad or not.

The old venue was mostly outdoors, so that explains the gallery you've linked to. On that note, I really shouldn't have clicked that link. Worst cosplay I ever did is in there, this is so embarassing.
Back on the venue, this years is a shitty tiny hotel in Nottingham, expect crappy indoor photos. Not sure if I'd return to that venue even if someone paid me to, it's fucking shit.

I wish the small cons would return to the Park Inn in Northampton and I really hope Kita will choose that hotel again for their spring convention next year. Well, anything but AmeChibi's venue is fine really.

They didn't cancel last year though. Ame's always run alternate years with Aya. This year it's different in that they and Kita will be both running, with each swapping between being the big con and the little con.

The photos from the last few years will be outside because Keele uni was gorgeous, but unfortunately the campus was just too spread out to make it work. The new hotel looks shit but we'll see, it'll be nice if it gets to go to the Hilton next year. I still miss Leicester Uni.

At Amecon this weekend.

The hotel is absolutely shit. I thankfully booked else where but the hotel is an abomination. They spent all the money on the reception and jack shit on anything else.

I saw the rooms earlier as a friend is staying in one and holy he'll Is it bad. Going to take photos and upload them Monday when I have a good internet connection.

The first day of the con thoughts? The AMV disco was a safe bet and was fun but suffered hugely because of the venue but even more so because the sound system was terrible. I mean holy fuck. It was an abomination.

The anime OP segment was weak though. It lacked the big floor fillers. It had some sure, but there were periods where nothing good was played. The OP to season 7 of Bleach? Really?

Think there were issues at Keele, weekend they wanted had building work. Moving either side meant stepping on the toes of other cons. They announced at aya, then realised they hadn't got a suitable date and cancelled/apologised on Facebook.

Then the chairman who took over from the "party on dudes" guy quit and we all ended up with a smaller con with a newish committee. Talking "original 2004 ame committee" I think it's only one or two guys. CBeebies checking the names.

Didn't bother going as the venue apparently sucked at gemu and I lost a little faith after the "new chairman, running, not running, chairman quit, new smaller con" shenanigans put me off.

Any drama there so far? The Facebook feed just seems to be generic events are happening hope you are having fun stuff.

>> No.8244685

The last con I attended (excluding Expo and other day events etc) was AyaCon at Warwick University and it was bloody brilliant. Having read around though, I get the impression that it may have just been the last good con - how true is this would you say?

Sad that cons aren't perhaps quite what they were but now so very glad I got to experience things whist the going was good.

>> No.8244721

>>8244685
Probably true.

Amechibi looks like it's going to suck and ame has been going downhill since it moved to keele. Kita seems to be more about parties and self promotion of the egos on the committee than running a decent con. Minami is the same as ever. Fun if you know the people/attend out of habit.

People are just getting old. The technology is there for anyone to find anime now. It's not a super special best friends club. You can see new stuff right away online, it's not a big deal to go to a con and see a new release. Plus you've reached over saturation with all the cosplay events like mcm and lcc. This means there is less outstanding cosplay at the fan run cons.

Fandom has stagnated and those with the means and skill to run events don't seem to be interested anymore. You also have all the university clubs to attend instead. Cons are not as big of a deal as they were ten years ago. It's more the domain of weebs coming of drinking age as established con committees try to remain relevant in catering to a generation of people nothing like them.

>> No.8244775

>>8244685
AyaCon always stood out because it had a fairly consistent committee behind it and they traded off years with AmeCon so there was two years for each to recuperate and build. Other cons don't have those luxuries and Ame's a shell of its former self with Aya gone. Kita's always been B-tier. Minami is an arbitrary piss-up.

>>8244721 has it right. There's no value in that kind of convention these days. If you want a big cosplay gathering and dealer rooms, nothing is going to be bigger than MCM in those areas. If you want to watch anime you've already got better access in the comfort of your own home and if you want to play games with people you just pay for an Xbox Live subscription. The traditional convention only exists now as an excuse for shut-ins to get out of their parents basements a couple times a year and get wasted.

Do yourself a favour and just forget about the old conventions. They're obsolete and dead.

Got up and felt fairly chill Saturday. Wasn't a huge amount on if I'm honest. Having done Ame, Aya and Kits for many years I've been used to having to juggle the time table to see everything I wanted - Ame 15 though had very little going on during the day tbh.

The panels were upstairs (on the 10th fecking floor) which would be less of an issue if there was more than one lifting working. One lift was broken Friday by fat weebs. Had a look around the dealers room to see the usual tat. Cue for the bring and buy was like an hour long though which was stupid for a line with about 20 people in it...

Wasn't expecting anything from the cosplays but one or two were actually pretty cool. The girl in the blue dress with the little wings (not sure what you're from) you were best imo. Only too performances this time - Weird muffled opera singer chick who was ok but got tucked over by the popcorn speakers. And the guy? girl? Who did the ribbon routine which was meh. No strippers it were plenty of other sights - Including an obease Yoko with a sharpie bra... From what I saw she was wearing a white bra which she coloured in. It wasn't even a black bra!

The hotel bar near the party room closed shop early on in the night as the floor collapsed, lol.

But to the hotel's credit they gave no shits about you drinking your own booze so it was a cheap night for me.

When I got to the party room on Saturday I was expecting a terrible night like Friday. Room was empty again. The dance group came out and it was so awkward looking around with everyone glued to the walls and sitting down. It felt like a gentlemen's club but thankfully some guys got up and started dancing. The vocalist wasn't very good though. But again, not sure if it was just the curse of the popcorn speakers striking again. Be interesting to hear what the group thought performing at ame if any of you guys read cgl.

Disco was standard con fare. Better than Friday by miles but still not Aya by a long shot.

Too many cons/events nowadays. As you age assuming you are now early mid twenties after graduating you are more worried about saving for a house, car, career etc than impressing some passing friends you see a couple of times a year with admittedly amazing costumes.

I quit, used to be into cosplay loads. Then more cons came, couldn't afford to do them all. Hard enough having masquerade and floor costumes with something new for two events a year, let alone however many there are now.

I'm only here now for drama and con musings. Oh and the occasional cosplay pic.

It's nice to hear from people who deal with that kind of stuff every day and hearing about the bullshit they have to put up with. They work quite hard to discourage people from going all weekend and there's more of a focus on food, but I prefer it so much. There's a new venue this time, though so I can't say about that. Their events tend to be held in the middle of the hall, and most of their stalls (that aren't food) tend to be more cutesy stuff or actual culture stuff rather than the same old anime weeb tat - that might appeal to you more though? I occasionally work as a maid myself and I go full uguu for my maid persona. But I wouldn't class myself as a weeb in my everyday life or even when I'm around fellow anime fans where most people relax and allow weeb tendencies to manifest.

I opted out of running a panel at Ame cus the venue looked so bad. I'm glad I did as the sound quality was terrible and none of the rooms big enough.
Warwick is amazing for running panels in cus of the lecture theatre setup, so I'll probably be doing one or two.

That said, I do feel sad that people complain about a lack of things to do when the panels are attendee-run. They had karaoke and the rock band live thing which was cool, and there were events happening - just maybe not to your taste. Kita is held up as some holy grail but it literally just has parties.

Just got back from AmeChibi. Ok, let's deal with all this shit-posting right off. It was a mini-con. It was supposed to be a mini con. Under 1000 people, not as much in the way of panels but the whole thing was professionally handled. It's the first con I've ever gone to where pretty much everything ran on time. A few minutes here or there but on time. The venue sucked - no arguing about that. The Britannia needs to be torn down and re-built from the ground up but the plus side was that the staff didn't give a shit if you brought in your own food and booze and trashed the place. Anyone who went to Gemu knew to stay at the Travel lodge down the road which wasn't perfect but was better than the Britannia.
Yeah, Ashram was on duty, but he behaved himself. There were tons of pubs and restaurants and shops within walking distance. Fun was had and I'd give it a cautious thumbs up. Not the perfect con but fine for a mini - dip-your-toe-in-the-water experimental con. Now I just can't wait for Kita!

>>Food
Hyper Japan is great because food.
Get in some company to provide takoyaki etc and you're golden. Anything running in Birmingham or London has access to a massive Asian population with street carts who could set up something like steam buns or even just Japanese sweets or Taiyaki... Kita and other hotel based cons may find this difficult due to hotel policy though and I appreciate that.

>>Maid Cafes
Link to above. Put some good food in there, with good service, and I'm up for that. If Anime League can run one, I'm sure more experienced people (like the actual maid groups of the UK possibly?) could do a great job.

The Ame committee were enthusiastic and I personally wouldn't fault them on that at all. They did what they could with what they had on the day and a number of people really did go all out trying to run a good con. I've gone to Amecon for many years and have a good time.

Personally though, I did think AmeChibi felt lackluster at times. I'm not sure if it was a planning issue or transitioning period or what. I mean people were skeptical about AmeChibi after it skipped a year in the wake of Ayacon which I can't imagine helped fill people with confidence.

Committee members and their friends will no doubt try and scapegoat and say the venue was entirely to blame but I don't think it was just that. And even if it was - Who made the decision to hold it in Nottingham in the first place here? There were gaps in the schedule where there was little (or even nothing) to do. The games room was disappointing. The sound system in every room was garbage. Lack of guests. etc.

>>8243640
Sums it up. Magical grills and racing both good though.

Contrast this with Ayacon or even previous Amecons, yeah you had double the numbers but they had 3-4 times the events. You had voice actors, you had a handful of well known cosplayers - I enjoyed DarkerLink btw but another one or two perhaps? Perhaps more than a single panel for a guest to really make use of them too?

Of course many panels are going to be dependent on people putting themselves forward but perhaps also consider paying for guests - I'm fairly certain Aya has done so in the past, no? Even when it's had to spend generally to run at Warrick. Also reach out to content creators in the UK like artists, prop makers, professionals and bands etc. who want to push their brand. I can't foresee parties turning down publicity and fandom hype.

I'm sure a number here won't agree with me but these are some of my thoughts. I'm trying to help as I want UK cons to survive and appeal to older fans while still pulling in new peeps.

A super basic outfit anybody who has been making costumes for a year could do with a pocket money budget and she's already shown off several nurse outfits before.

Of course her $2000 donations can't possibly cover it either.

Toko. Most of the events and games that run suck but it's a cheap weekend camping with food, a bonfire and most people are chill. Saying that, most Toko gofers are jobsworths almost on a par with Ass-Ram. There was this one gofer who keep yelling at people, tugging badges off, and being a straight up douche to anyone who was talking around the bonfire after 11pm because it was a "residential area". Campfire was in the Orange circle. It was great, he had one of those red light-sabers with sound effects and was using it to check badges/faces. No one took him seriously and just gave him shit all night till he gave up. The next night they had the best worst "party tent" with a bunch of weebs trying to dance to AMVs. In any case, it wouldn't have come because Myst just bought a new house and is moving. He barely made it to Minami with two people, if there's not enough crew they can't attend a con. Ame probably told him not to worry as they had a few and consoles.

The guy running the games room was such a prick. The TV Mario Kart was on was displaying an auto-off message, so he switched the screen off in the middle of a race. Then walked away from it grinning, laughed at us when we got annoyed.
