To nail polish anons: Revlon Top Speed 020 Sheer Pearl is perfect for Pearl's nails. Its hard to get on a pic but its actually pearlescent so it shimmers pink, green, purple, and blue depending on the light. I'm going to *try* to paint my actual gem with it as well.

Like, the first time I ever saw rose was during the episode Amethyst broke her gem, so I saw rose as this pure white statue covered in roses and I really want to try and play around with that.

I love the way this wig is styled.

I'm going to put together a quick Pearl for my next con (which is happening very, very soon), and I know I can't pull off what I want in full capacity. I found a cheap turtleneck-y tank top with no flair at the bottom that I'll probably use for this run. Hopefully, I can do a run with a cheaper wig to test out styling option. Wig styling is new to me, since my previous cosplays involved straightforward styles... I'm horrified of messing up a nice wig. Do most cons have a booth that styles wigs, and would it be worth my time/money to do that instead of doing it myself?

Regarding nail polish for Pearl: I looked through my nail polish collection and thought ORLY Rock Candy looked really nice for Pearl. It's sold at a few beauty supply stores, like Ulta or Sally's (if you're in the US). Either something like that or nude/no polish would be my preference.

What's the consensus on not using bodypaint for Pearl if you have pale skin? My coloring is like pic related (sorry, Kim) and I think Pearl is the best gem, but my skin is super sensitive and I'm scared that the scrubbing required to remove thick enough clown white would fuck me up. I'd probably just do paler foundation than usually and go for a subtly shimmery look. If it'd look too stupid then I'd just skip it, though.

I think you'll be fine. Jasper's a cartoon character, so it's more about the shape then size of your nose. If anything, a bigger nose would work fine since Jasper is a huge Amazon of a figure. You just have to be sure to work the fullness of your lips.

Diagram not at all to scale.

Match blue dot to blue and red dot to red. Just cut the top of the apron 'skirt' wider than the bodice, and knife pleat the excess behind the bodice so that the skirt flares out from the right place.

The top looks stiff because (on a historical garment) it'd be pinned down flat at the top and secured at the waist by a sash. It's not board-stiff so much as secured flat. The skirt looks pretty stiff to me, though, because of how it lays flat out from the pleat crease instead of falling gathered there.

The outside edges of the skirt hem should be longer than the middle.

I saw it as less of an apron and more as a part of the dress. I would take the bottom half of the pattern piece the other anon drew out and attach it to the skirt, and make the middle of your bodice the same light blue.

Shrug, I see it as a short pinner apron like this, simplified and smoothed to fit the art style. But I also see how you could interpret it like the panel that hangs down front on Zelda's dress. You're right that it should be sewn right on, though, especially since it has no waistband.

You're welcome! It should also probably be interfaced or lined to keep it smooth and make sure the dark blue doesn't show through it, depending on your fabric . The skirt will have to be lined, since the sloped hem + knife pleats mean the back side of it shows.

I don't bleach my skin to cosplay Japanese characters, and I know that making up my skin to be lighter would look fucking awful. Just do it and own it, people won't say shit.

If you're planning on posting your cos pictures on tumblr, anything that's a shade or two darker than your natural tone (using darker foundation or bronzer) would be considered blackface and you'd get jumped for it. Especially since there's a tone of people playing gatekeeper with the show lately. I think you'd be fine as going with your normal white skin, just use enough bronzer to looked sun-kissed without going overboard.

Also shitty MS paint pearl skin ref, its not white but i don't think its a humanly achievable skin colour.
Even if you had no pigment in your skin you would still have to deal with the pink hues your blood vessels give you (and pearl would very likely have blue hues to her skin since she blushes blue).

So while i think it looks strange that people don't do anything with their skin colour for Pearl, i think it looks just as odd when people use white face paint

I agree about the white face paint. I've seen a few Pearls go pure white, and it looks strange and flat.

I'm worried about my Pearl cosplay, because my skin has reacted poorly to the body paints I've tried before... I'm probably being too whiny and paranoid. Eh. I'll try another one or two just in case when I get the chance. If I don't end up with paint, I'll use my concealer to reduce redness, add some blue blush, and use some subtle brown eye shadow to accentuate the blue in/near my eyes. I also worked on the pearl to give it an off-white finish that fits my skin tone. Hopefully, it works out when I do my test run!

Yeah, even for characters that have white skin, white body paint is usually very hard to pull off.

What i was thinking was doing a base of white (probably going to use ben nye's clown white) and then sealing it with a semi translucent light coloured powder ( very likely going to use airspun's loose face powder) and then try highlighting and what not with some of nyx's products (was looking at their roll on shimmer, prismatic shadow and loose pearl eye shadow)

But this is all just planning, i've been getting some inspiration by looking at ethereal makeup on google. Stuff like pic related

I think the petti could be excused if you had an equally voluminous wig (like two or three wigs sewn together) because I like cartoonish proportions, but if you won't be doing total wig deathtrap then taking the petti volume down would be good.

Increasing the puff of your sleeves (making them more circular) might also balance out a larger petticoat if you were to go that route. All that aside, you're looking cute so far!

There's three layers (hoop skirt which I sewed on mesh to, 1st layer of this weird... really stiff plastic mesh? which was 30 yards, 2nd layer and the 3rd layer was a whole bolt of tulle, so maybe like 108 yards since it was cut down the middle).

I personally don't think it looks very good when people don't color their skin for gems (including Pearl and Garnet even if the person's natural skin color is black or white it) because it just looks kinda lazy and makes them look like humans instead of aliens. I don't think being POC is even relevant here, it will still have pretty much the same look. If you have sensitive skin or whatever you can also opt in for a colored body suit for your arms or making gloves out of purple sheer material.

There's tons of affordable makeup and if you wanna save just go for a bottle of mehron paint and seal it. One bottle can cover your arms and face and is $9 at the store. I'm sure you can find it online for cheaper.

In this case because it means I have similar facial features to how the character is drawn. So I was wondering if by having similar lips and nose, if that meant I could skip the coloring. I just lurk here to look at pretty costume pictures but I wasn't sure if it would be considered a faux pas to just dress and wig like a character that I sort of look like in face and body, but skip the coloring. Body paint really isn't as intimidating as it seems. If you have sensitive skin mehron paradise is really good. I' had a lot of allergies and tend to get darkspots from my allergy bumps so I understand the concern. I'd opt for gloves and using a paint that doesn't have latex in it. Ithink someone reccomended snazaroo before, but I've never used that one.

If you have a basic knowledge of sewing you can try this tutorial someone made for homestuck trolls, to avoid painting your arms and stuff.

If you want to try easy skin coloring, you could use tights and make some armsocks and then you would only have to paint your face and a little bit of your upper body. Coloring your skin would make you look a lot more like Amethyst rather than just yourself, even if you do look a lot like her already. It still gives a different feel, you might be surprised by how much of a difference it makes.

Basically just be aware that if you dont paint your skin some people may be silently judging you (or more vocally judging you if your picture is posted on here) but if you dont care then do whatever you want.

I use ben nye creme colors, sealer and their translucent setting powder. Also you can use it on your body but theres no guaruntee it can rub off, a lot of people us e pax, which is basically BASIC paint mixed with pros aide. You can order no tack pros aide which is specifically made for body paint. Just mix everything to the right colour and seal the ben nye and pax and youre good to go. Just bring stuff for touch ups and dont use cheap acrylic paint.

I got magicake aqua paint from ben nye and it applies soooo nicely and you don't even know it's there after it dries. I got their marine blue and lime green for peridot and their blue is so nice and vibrant but their lime green is so translucent. So don't get their lime green as a heads up, since no one ever reviewed that color

It's 40:60 non-toxic paint mixed with medical adhesive then powdered. The pros aide is what makes it comfortable and look good and safe to be on your skin. It does start to feel a little uncomfortable after several hours in the heat (especially if you're wearing it covering a lot of skin, since it doesn't let you sweat) but it's essentially smudge proof. Pic related, my gray after a few hours in costume, outdoors, in the summer. No paint smudges even around the hem of the shirt and the armband.

I also use pax and it is wonderful. Some issues to keep in mind though are the following:
-takes a while to remove so keep that in mind if you are doing a cosplay the day after that shows off those areas of skin
-comes off the finger tips kinda easily so you will have to reapply it throughout the day
-dont use it on your face besides maybe some spots where your face doesn't crease. It's generally fine if you want to put it on your chin, cheeks, or nose bridge though. Putting it on your nose bridge can be especially useful for a character who wears glasses so the glasses cant rub the paint off in that spot

Thanks for the advice, I do appreciate it, cause I don't want to look like an idiot. I'm leaning towards just making the leggings to wear around a con as part of my street clothes for now. I will investigate the body paint but I think I need to experiment with it before committing to doing the full cosplay.

I also realized that one of the first SU cosplays I saw was a medium brown toned girl doing Garnet and maybe that's why I thought "oh I don't have to paint myself, she didn't" but arguably Garnet is almost human colored and Amethyst def is not.

Also in reference to the comments about what race(s) she might be based on, I'm mixed, and it's not that I see her as any certain "race" just that she looks more like me than generic cartoon characters usually do if th1at makes sense.

Would anyone here agree that Steven Universe is becoming the new homestuck in a way? Maybe it's not as extreme as the HS fandom was, literally filling up cons and body paint everywhere. TBH I find this fandom way more annoying than HS's. It's not actually as done as it looks there (the hairs weren't actually kept in place by anything in that photo, it was more to see how it looked laid out how i wanted) because i have to get some more materials first but basically here is what the base looks like and I'll just be covering the foam and side areas in some peach colored fabric before reattaching the rest of the wefts to the wig and then styling it permanently
