The layers underneath the top-most layers of my wig are short and frizzy, and no amount of "Johnson and Johnson detangle spray" is working on it. I've honestly never seen anyhting like this on a wig, and it's incredibly frustrating. Do I need to buy a new wig or is there anything I can do to fix this? Pic related.

So I'm needing some help on Command Seals.
I have two options already planned:

A. Acrylic Paint
Pros- Easy to put on, easy to get off, and the color works well.
Cons-Too easy to come off. I can't get any water on it or have anything touching it, which just seems gross to me during a con.

B. Temporary Tattoo
Pros-Easy to use and longer lasting
Cons-I only have 1, and I need it for 2 days. They're slightly better than Acrylic paint, but not by that much. Also, I have smaller hands, so it's a bit bigger than it needs to be.

I'm wondering if anyone has any better options that'd work out for me? It'd have to be something that I could grab locally in the next couple of days.

I tried a bunch for Kiritsugu and I'd say the best is getting some of the command seal tattoos off ebay, but before you use them grab some scissors and trim the paper fairly close to the design. Reason being the rest of the clear sheet will be shiny and obious on your hand. Then give it a dab of clear makeup powder over it to reduce the extra shine and make it more set into the skin.

You costumes are really only limited by your imagination.
Whether or not people will recognize you is another thing. But if you are confident enough and out in enough effort someone might still figure out who you are.

Then again, he ended up painting a large L on his shirt and bloodied it into a B.
Interesting tactic but there were still those that mistook him for L.

I am wanting to make this cosplay and was hoping for some advice.
1) I want the wings to be pretty big, but the back of her dress is almost non-exhistant. I was wondering if people think I should make a harness type thing into dress, even though her wings OR since wings are almost and her neckline, would it be possible ( as in not breaking my neck) to support the wings through the neck piece.
2) I want the skirt to be somewhat full, I was planning to do this by making a special hoop skirt and covering each side in the feather/strips/frilly skirt pieces OR do you think layers and layers is a better idea. I worry about the layer idea and it looking more frilly/heavy than what I am more looking for which is floating/lightweight.

Make sure you check your con rules about how far things can extend from your body. Unless this is going to be exclusively for a competition or photoshoot, you'll need to be able to remove them fairly easily to comply with most rules. You should be able to make an hourglass shaped harness along the back - the wings won't be nearly as stable this way, but if you reall want them as concealed as possible, it'll work with tinkering. Don't have it loop around your neck. This is a horrible idea in every respect. Make the straps black and trim them with whatever you use on the collar.

Open front hoop skirts don't exist because what gives the hoop its strength and shape it it being a continuous circle.Cut it in half and it will spring into a straight line. Use a heavy canvas as your base layer or a heavy interfacing between fashion fabrics. It'll keep the skirt from collapsing too much and still move with you.

I glue acrylic pieces together all day with acetone. Soak a q-tip with some and dap it on the two parts that need to connect. Then dab a little more around it. It will sort of fuse/melt the plastic together. Careful around the clear part it can smudge it permanently.

Hey so I've been wanting to do this cosplay. I've decided to go with a stretch velvet for the dress but I was wondering what is the best way to go about the gold detailing? Also is there a way to get that gradient look near the bottom of the dress?

Those are way too big. I need little chibi type wings. I was actually considering just buying one of those backpacks with the wings on them since it's a con and I'll need a bag anyway, but there was a tutorial on how to make little batwings out of wire and spandex. I can't remember exactly how they sewed the spandex on the wire, which is what I'm having trouble with.

First, make sure you get dye that'll actually take to whatever the velvet is. Stretch usually has a lot of synthetics in it, so check the label and buy a dark red dye. Make the dress without finishing the edges or adding the details and get is soaking wet. Follow the dye instructions and dip in the top portion. Remove quickly and hang upside down til dry. Repeat with dipping in various depths until gradient is achieved.

For the gold, I would hand stitch gold cording to the dress. Trace out the pattern in chalk and tack down the cord in strategic spots to hold it in place while you stitch it more securely.

Mold making and casting is one of the broadest areas of costume making, literally everyone has their own way of doing it, so thats a tough question. If you want to mold something youve made in clay, its usually best to make your model from a sulferless clay (thats really important, most silicone rubbers go batshit when they are used on sulfer), then use a 2 part silicone rubber from a place like smooth-on. If youre not familiar with smooth-on, theyre pretty much the go-to company for molding and casting materials for cosplay and props. Check them out, they have a ton of videos and other tutorials to help you out once you decide how exactly you want to go about making your molds. And regarding the caulking thing, dont do it. 100% silicone caulk mixed with mineral spirits used to be the way i did all my molding, and it worked okay, but compared to legitimate mold making rubbers the difference in quality is night and day. Plus caulking molds have a horrible shelf life, they deteriorate very quickly, and if you dont do the exact mixture, you get a ton of nasty crack things in the mold. Molding is one of those things where you get out of it what you put in. If you cheap out and dont do your research, youre not going to be happy with your results. But learn and study the techniques, use good quality products, and you will be rewarded greatly.

I could see using elastic running across the bottom, but I imagine walking on them all day would deteriorate them quickly.

I'm working on a costume of the Scarecrow from the 3rd season of Batman, and I'm trying to get it ready for Dragon Con here in the states in a couple of weeks. I've got the burlap and I've been painting the skull that's going to be the shape of his jaw, and I've all the plans needed to make the thing but I'm really going to want something to separate my head from the actual burlap mask because that shit's itchy as hell. I was going to get a black morphsuit mask, but I'd have to order one online and I've got a big head. I know they're supposed to be stretchy but I don't want to get one that's too tight and constricts my cranium all day (many of the adds on Amazon say "one size fits MOST'' scarily enough).

Hypothetically I could get something really breathable and just stich up a sloppy cowl of some kind, but that'd be some notable work to tack onto the end of the project when the con that's only a few weeks away.

hey guys
I bought this fucking skirt off lacemarket, it said offbrand. It looked super nice in the photo (it wasnt worn, just laid out) and it matched my measurements
Lo and behold, when it got here, its way too big and looks like shit. It doesnt have the right shape, its too long, and it falls off my waist
Its got a three inch waistband and a six inch ruffle on the bottom. I thought to remove the waist and the ruffle and replace with better fabric, and make it tighter plus shorter, but I dont know if that will fix the shape. Is this too much work? I have a sewing machine and I'm pretty good with alterations, but is it even worth it? pic related. Sash not for it, but it was so loose, I had to tie it onto my dressform so it wouldnt fall. The pins wouldnt hold it since it was so heavy. Note the ruffle bottom. The shitty ruffle bottom. I love this shade of pink, and I want to save this skirt...

It's not a yukata, it's just a generic robe. Kimono/yukata overlap completely in the front rather than meeting edge to edge (it'll be way too big if you wear it edge to edge), have narrow wrist openings at the sleeves, and the collar only extends as far down as the hip, not all the way to the bottom hem. I would suggest pep and fiberglass, that method tends to have much sharper edges, which is perfect if youre trying to replicate the cel-shading of borderlands. I actually have some game rip pep files for his helmet and torso that i found when i was considering a zero cosplay a while ago. Never ended up using them, but id be happy to send them your way if youd like. I second this notion. An alternative to Styrene is this product called foamed PVC. I buy it from TAP plastics because I'm on the west coast. You can get it 1/8" thick, but it's still very lightweight. It should be very easy to mock up the hand guard shapes in heavy paper, then transfer them to the PVC. It can be shaped with a heat gun, then detailed with more PVC, Apoxie Sculpt, craft foam, or whatever.

Google "fusible interfacing" or go to Joann's and get some heavyweight fusible interfacing. You iron it on to fabric to stiffen it, essentially. What anon means is iron on interfacing so the fabric is very stiff and then add ruffles. The stiffness added my the interfacing will make it stand up.

I'd start with some kind of pre-existing helmet, like a skateboard helmet, just because it's hard to make compound curves from scratch. Remove the padding, tape over the ventilation holes and patch them from the inside with something like plumber's epoxy, and use a dremel to add the ear cutaway if necessary. Construct face and neck plates out of whatever you're making the rest of your armor out of, prime and paint everything with the same material. You can use screw posts/chicago screws to articulate the face plate so it can be flipped back. >> No.7763551

I would start with a plastic headband for ease of getting the thing to stay tensioned on your head. Pattern two long half-oval shapes to be the front and back of the bonnet: they should be between 2x and 3x as long as the headband for ideal ruffliness, test with newspaper. Transfer each pattern twice to your fabric so you have an outer and an inner, front and back, and copy onto medium fusible interfacing. Cut shit out. Iron fusible interfacing onto fabric. Sew pairs of fabric pieces together right side to right side along curved edge, turn inside out, press carefully to produce a pair of double-sided half ovals. Optional, but will probably produce stiffer/better results: use Heat n' Bond to fuse the two layers together so they move as one and stiffen each other. Gather half ovals on their straight sides. Hotglue to underside of plastic headband, and to the edge of the headband to pull the ruffle up so it flares. Glue ribbon over plastic headband, leave enough excess so you can tie the ends.

That stuff is incredible, easily the best commercial product there is for tinting visors. If you use it correctly you should end up with a tint similar to a pair of dark sunglasses, and short of shining a flashlight at your eyes, its almost impossible to see through from the outside. Biggest thing to remember is to be sure to read the can and follow the instructions. Apply it in several very light coats till you get the desired tint, wait for the coat to be completely dry before you apply the next one, and when youre done hold the can upside down and spray it until a clear aresol comes out, because those cans tend to clog up really easily if you dont. Take your time with it and youll get some awesome looking results.

Oh lord anon, DO NOT surface props with FastMache or Celluclay if you want a smooth substrate. It will look like a science fair volcano and mock your efforts at sanding. Do the top layer of paper mache in something thinner than newsprint, like paper from a phonebook, so the edges of the strips are less defined, and then skimcoat it with spackle or woodfiller. Finish with a few rounds of priming + sanding (I think gesso works better over paper mache than spray primer) and you shouldn't be able to see the paper texture.
Wood glue is probably the best adhesive for paper mache in terms of being able to sand the layers.

I tried fixing my EVA Foam armour by repeating the whole gesso - primer - spraypaint - top coat cycle. Sadly enough, the layers would still get peeled off completely during the upcoming con, so I've heard about this thing called Plasti Dip.
The problem is, Red Plasti Dip isn't available in my country for the most part... unless you're willing to cough up around 25 Euros (incl. shipping costs) per spraying-can.
However, I can get other plasti dip cans like grey and black quite cheaply. The thing is, it won't have that whole "cover up the damages incase layers of paint scatter off" thing going on.
So what should I do, just go for the grey plasti dip or go for the red plasti dip?

Best way to get it choppy looking is to cut one small lock of hair at a time (cut vertically/at an angle so it doesn't look blunt) and seal the very end of each lock with a bit of hair glue. I've never had luck doing it the way you would with real hair, where you thin in layers.

>>7766905
Wtf, who recommended that you coat EVA with gesso? Of course it peeled, gesso's not flexible or adhesive enough, you need something like gloss medium or Mod Podge or fabric glue if you don't want to go for solvent-based sealants.
I'd start out with gray, since you'll need a couple of layers of Plastidip. Get the red for the top layers once you've figured out how much it takes to do one coat over your whole armor.
Since I assume you already have a respirator and protective stuff, you might want to consider neoprene glue + lacquer thinner as a sealant: http://gyakuyoga.hobby-web.net/cosgijutu/raion-tosoubondog17-En.html
He's using Japanese brands, but you can substitute your local equivalent.

>>7766960
If it's been heat-set it shouldn't go anywhere, throw it in the dryer on high for a bit after it's air-dried for 24 hours. As a person who has ruined many shirts with acrylic paint, shit does not like to come out of clothing, especially if you've mixed it with fabric painting medium.

So I ended up buying two colours (offwhite and something very close to pic related) of this gorgeous peau de soie the other day for a cosplay dress and now, quite probably due to years of semi-irrational "avoid any satins at all costs", am having serious second thoughts.
They're both such nice quality fabric, I love the weight to it and the colours are spot on, but will the bit of shine make it look shitty in photos? It will just be a simple fitted bodice and circle skirt really, with off-the shoulder long sleeves

>> No.7767180

>>7767168
Not all satins are bad, man. Costume satin is the main offender. Otherwise, satin just looks bad if you use it for the wrong thing (like a military uniform, as an example).
It sounds good for whatever you're using it for, so there shouldn't be a problem.

that looks gorgeous, anon. If it comes out nice, I'd love to see it

This tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AOfHOs45ST8

>respirator

I don't have one, since I haven't been able to find them. I just tend to breath in the other direction, towards the open door since I'm working in a garage.

> Dat broken English

Sorry I can barely make any sense of what the tutorial tries to tell.
Okay, so gesso can be thrown into the thrash. Good to know.
So if I go with either one of these routes:

A) Grey plasti dip layers - primer spraypaint layers - red colour spraypaint layers - top coat spray

B) Mod Podge /fabric glue (layers?) - primer spraypaint layers - red colour spraypaint layers - top coat spray

Would it result in me having EVA foam whose colour spraypaint will remain in place despite all the flexing and "light scratching" or will it still lose layers of paint after a day con-visiting?
Or is one of the two better? Because due to time constraints and whatnot, I fear these are the only two options I have --- unless there's an even easier one to do both when it comes to time and getting the materials easier.

Jesus, what the fuck is Sachie doing making tutorials? Her armor is brushstroke-ridden shit.

You're going to /need/ a respirator to work with Plastidip. It is the most foul-smelling compound I have ever worked with, everything in your garage is going to smell like blue cheese and cancer-related death. If you breathe it you will develop a terrible headache and hand tremors in short order.
Both A) and B) will survive normal con abuse in my experience, B) is less expensive/hazardous but takes more time and work to apply nicely.

> Jesus, what the fuck is Sachie doing making tutorials? Her armor is brushstroke-ridden shit.
Her Sumia cosplay looked fairly decent, so as a newbie in EVA foam costume making I thought gesso was a good choice, especially since I had the idea going on that woodglue or mod podge might not do well with preventing spraypaint from getting absorbed.

> You're going to /need/ a respirator to work with Plastidip. It is the most foul-smelling compound I have ever worked with, everything in your garage is going to smell like blue cheese and cancer-related death. If you breathe it you will develop a terrible headache and hand tremors in short order.
That sounds really horrible.

> Both A) and B) will survive normal con abuse in my experience, B) is less expensive/hazardous but takes more time and work to apply nicely.
At best, I can only buy 2 grey plastidip sprays of 11 Euros each and maybe let one red plastidip spray get shipped for 26 Euros -- since I want to keep my budget at 50 --- 70s tops if necessary, and respirators aren't that cheap either iirc.
So if I go for route B (Mod Podge), do you have any tutorials or any tips that could help me do it in the most efficient way (how many days would it take to be completed, how many layers, waiting time, et cetera)? I mean, as long as it won't result in the same situation as with gesso (i.e. collective layers getting peeled off or scratched off easily due to friction and flexing), I'm cool with it.

Gesso is shit. Period. It peels off too easily because it has zero to none adhesive properties, it's too thick so it leaves terrible brush stroke marks on the surface, it's just generally an awful product that a lot of cosplayers (mis)use for some reason. I used it a lot until I realized it looks horrible and there are far more better sealants than that crap. Sure, it can work if used in the right way but it takes too much trouble when you have easier alternatives.

Terrible, unrealistic surface, visible seams she didn't even try to cover or and away, shitty fitting. Who watches this and thinks it looks good enough to want similar results?

Just use wood glue mixed with water, it'll stick to the foam, allows flexibility and gives a lot nicer surface for starters. If you need a thicker surface, plastidip.

Not only that but it's quite brittle too. I hoped I would negate that downside if I were to add even more layers of gesso, but alas.

So the spray-paint will stick to the foam despite all the flexing and pressure?

Alright /cgl/. Before I actually start throwing money down on this I wanted your thoughts on my plan.

Planning to do Krusty from Log Horizon, full armor with his fuck huge battleaxe. I'm planning on going with a LH cosplay group to Shadocon, which is open October 31. I've took about an hour to draw up what needs to be done.

I've got the axe handle to make from wood, expanding foam for the head.
Cape, frontal cloth, with pattern.
Chest mount
Brooch
Shoulder pieces
Elbow guards
Bracers
Gloves (just a slab of some material glued on some blue gloves really)
Thigh Pads
Kneepads
Leggings
Shoes
Belt

I've got at 2+ possible days a week for true dedicated work on this.
This is also my first true effort to cosplay.
Think it's possible? Also tips and words of wisdom are very much desired.

>6. Medals and Ribbons
I don't know where to even begin on that shit.

Anybody have ideas on where to identify and find some of these these?

I am planning on going all out this Halloween. Namely, I am planning to dress as "happy-hardcore man." Before you ask, it will be a combination of:

As you imagine, planning on sticking B onto A, powering with C, blasting happy-hardcore and weirding out and making people wat at night. Silicone flexible intermediate wire will be soldered in at limb joint regions, by the way.

This is the first time I've done anything remotely like this; I haven't even posted on here before. Anyways, can I have some advice? Body suit color? If machine sewing is not an option at all though, just make sure you have some strong, sharp needles and pliers. Especially if you're not seasoned in handsewing, stick to a back stitch method, it'll make your stitches look evener. Same advice about the pins applies.
