I am a part of the lolita and mori girl communities. I feel that I have no go to person for inspiration (at least on the western hemisphere) when it comes to mori girl coords like I would for lolita and gyaru or even otome kei. Is it just because mori girl is a smaller community?

It's in Philadelphia and has quite a lot of girls from the local lolita comm. From what I see, they're all really nice! I think once fall rolls around, there'll be more to do since the hot weather makes it hard, but right now we're just talking about events we could do.

It's a little frustrating though, because every girl that wants to organize an event is like in the outskirts of Philly. I don't want to travel 2 hours to hang out in someone's backyard, but it must be horrible for them to travel hours to get to the live hub of the city too.

yes I think so.
In my country I only know one other mori girl. There is a local fb comm for mori girls, but there are only lolita's in there who will dress up mori once a year when they are having a mori kei meeting.
I used to be part of the lolita comm and I still see them as good friends. but that is not at all what I was looking for in a mori community.

are any of you part of a mori comm? and what is it like.

hi there fellow Philly forest kid! :) I really do hope there's gonna be at least one event in the summer but I don't think any of the admins are actually in the city at this time of the year? otherwise, i hope things do pick up in the fall. I was actually just planning on doing something in mid-august (thrifting or picnic of some sort) but I'm having trouble actually putting together an outfit that actually works in this weather. :(

>> No.7625157

Anyone here like mori gyaru? I like some mori kei stuff and also the gyaru mori style, it's a bit more modern and with shorter skirts and less layers than usual mori. I think i did a mori gyaru coord but i'm not sure if it's really...From someone who dresses usually in black, neon and pastel bright colors ie. gothic fashion, fairy kei and sweet lolita using more muted colors is weird for me.

Hey there too~

Yeah, the weather is horrible.. I tried to wear an outfit for like an hour and I was ready to have a stroke! Doesn't help that I sweat at the slightest thing. :c I think one of our main girls isn't even in the state because she went home from college, so that's a bummer. I'll probably organize a craft/bubba tea event once I see that it'll hit at least 79 degrees.

I just wonder if there's anything we can do in the meantime so the comm doesn't go dead for two months.

a crafting/bubble tea meet up would be perfect! but yea idk, I guess its better to just stick to indoor events or anything that restricts walking outside as much as possible. I can see something like the flower show being a perfect meetup but that's already passed :/

Look at a lot of (Asian) examples.
Opt for lighter pieces, both in terms of colour and fabric weight. For some reason a lot of westerners are really into "dark mori" which they seem to think means they can throw on hideous, chunky knits and brown boots and call it a day. Don't do that.
Learn how to layer. If you can't do this and make it look good in normalfag fashion, you're probably going to have a hard time doing so in alt fashions.
Take time building your wardrobe. I would suggest finding a piece (online or thrift) that you want to make your main piece and build a coord or two off of that by finding things online or slowly thrifting. A lot of people get so excited about the fashion that they jump to wear their first outfit too quickly, so it looks really unfinished.
Play with colours and patterns. Figure out what looks good on you and what goes with the overall aesthetic and start incorporating pops of colour and pattern into your wardrobe. I'm a big fan of the "ethnic" look Dearli had going on for a while there.
Invest in or make a lot of small accessories like brooches, collars, scarves, and hats to spice up your outfits. Small touches really complete a look.

This is pretty basic stuff, but I hope I helped. I am really interested in the fashion but have given up on building my wardrobe for now since lolita and moving abroad currently consume all of my time/money and my area's thrift is fucking dreadful.

Pic is a girl who I think understands it pretty well but could use a bit more colour.

I don't lack of colour is the issue with this outfit. Kinari is perfectly acceptable mori colour palette, my problem is it lacks that mori feel, its a bit too princessy and not foresty enough. I think it needs only a tiny change to make it more mori but I can't put my finger on it; I'd definitely switch the bag for a straw bag with lace detail or something more organic looking. Love her hair.

Honestly, while I think it's a less body-conscious fashion than say, lolita, mori girl doesn't look nearly as good on chubby people. If you can, try to slim down a bit.
That said, since it's so light and billowy and frequently features skirts, your body shape probably won't pose that much of a problem. Figure out where skirts should hit you in order to make your legs look the nicest, and use that as a general guideline for length. Maybe try coordinate outfits with cardigans or overshirts or even necklaces that pop to bring attention upwards.
The thing that bothers me about bigger bodies in mori is the arms, as too many layers or tight layers make them look even bigger and not as forest fairy like, so as a pear you're probably pretty safe.

Eh, I said I liked outfits with a bit of colour. I think adding a little muted blue or green here or even some brown would have made it feel more mori, but yeah, a different bag or hair accessories would have helped as well.
I also think it's one of the better outfits I've seen by a westerner and wasn't even saying it was bad; I just would have liked it if there had been something more to it.

Build up on basic separates like in this pic. I tend to prefer whites, creams, beiges for spring/summer and muted primary and earth colours for autumn/winter. Because it's summer you could lose a few of those layers, switch the grey knee socks for ankle socks or something. Remember to use accessories to give outifts a more mori feel. The outfit in pic is given a more mori feel by the bag and hair accessory.

I personally prefer the layered looks, but ones like this are nice, too. I think then you can more easily run into problems that most westerners seem to struggle with, though, like the outfit looking more hobo or "grandmother's closet" than mori. I don't know why, but it seems like a lot of people have a hard time understanding what a good mori base/main piece is.
Pic related. This is not "mori" at all to me. This girl has a few good outfits, but a lot of them miss the mark.

I've not seen a chubby mori girl do it very well, to be honest. While some of the the girl in your pic and >>7628116's outfits look passable, most look like shit. She coords converse with half the things, ffs.

Having a big bust is probably harder to deal with than big hips. While skirts can glide over/mask big hips, nothing can really make a big bust look dainty.
What are your measurements? Chubby and "busty" could mean anything depending on who you ask. I personally would consider this girl fat, not chubby.

To try to tame your boobs, you could try to invest in a binder and look for tops/layers that sort of balance out your bust and hips, kind of like >>7628116 but better. You run this risk of looking like a wide rectangle (or a potato, depending on your height), but I don't know how else you would deal with it.

Does anyone have any tips for making mori appear less kinda, I dunno, awkwardly hipstery looking? The Asian girls seem to make it look so natural and peaceful, like it just 'fits'. When I attempt mori, even if i feel I've used the right clothes and styling I just get this sense that I look a bit too try hard fashion victim. Perhaps it's all in the attitude, you wear the clothes in the way they make you feel sorta thing(?).

I never get tired of seeing pic related, her face is just so beautiful and I feel like I can't wait until more photo sets appear.

>>7636285
How do you do your makeup and hair? With Asian mori outfits, the hair is generally more natural looking (or, if it's styled, it's not so in the way like your pic related), and makeup is minimal, usually just Momoko blush and brown eyeliner, maybe a tinted lip balm.

I think the way you hold yourself is really important, too. Mori is loose and flowy, and your body and posture should reflect that- if you're holding yourself stiffly, you come off as if you're really trying with the fashion. It's kind of hard to explain, but I can always tell when someone's not used to wearing a certain type of fashion because they're usually kind of closed in, and the way they move makes it seem like they're not comfortable with the clothing. If you're worried that it doesn't look right on you, other people will be able to tell, and even if you were to copy an outfit exactly, it still would look 'off.'

I guess just try to get into a lifestyle type of mindset when you wear it. When you wear it as if it's normal clothing, something you wear daily with no thought behind it, you really get that nice, effortless look just from the way you present.

Am I making any goddamn sense?

I agree with >>7636435 on a lot of their points, particularly hair and makeup- a lot of people just leave their hair down (opting for a 'natural' look), when in reality most magazines, store images and street snaps feature mori girls with rather 'worked' hair- particularly braids and using hair accessories.

You only need look at this thread to see how color is used in the fashion.

The thing that seems the most unmori-ish to me regarding the potential of the dress, is that it looks like a strapless garment with underbust ties and is being held on the hanger not by the dress straps, but by the hoops that are used to hang clothing up and be tucked away when worn. If it had thicker straps I think it could work.

To be honest, one of the main reasons I wear mori girl is because it allows me to wear frilly and lacy stuff without being a full flown lolita, my other obsession. I would totally wear this girl's outfit minus the bow and wig.

I made this skirt about a year ago before I knew of mori. I adore the style but yes, still a beginner.
I added a bit more lace to the skirt after I took this picture, so it's a bit closer to the style, but when I wore it to my mothers birthday party a lot of the older ladies said it looked like a Tirol style Oktoberfest dress. That was -not- what I was going for! How do I make this more mori and less Tirol? I already considered removing the suspenders and not wearing white or cream under it. That cardigan doesn't work, imo.
You also should avoid black with mori, especially in the quantities you've got here. You're wearing what appears to be a black undershirt, a skirt with black in it, and black tights. That's not mori at all.
What is the pattern of your skirt? It doesn't seem to suit the aesthetic, either.
You need to tame your hair, too.
You don't have any accessories or small things, either.
Overall this just looks like a really frumpy, poorly coordinated normalfag outfit. If you hadn't asked about it, I would have had no idea that you were going for mori.

>>7646165
The straps and corsetting are really working against you here. I'm personally not a big fan of solid blocks of colour in mori, at least when they're made of fabric like this (as opposed to something more flowy and airy), but you might be able to make it work if you go with a more earth-tone palette instead of relying on creams/whites.
I think the length is also an issue, as it seems to be not long enough to serve as a maxi skirt nor short enough to allow for proper layering.
Idk, I guess I personally don't think this can really work. I love "ethnic" looks in mori, but they have to be done really well and in specific ways.

That's what I mean, though. I figured it would be about lolita length, and it looks like it has a more poofy/roomy skirt than would really suit mori. The material looks thicker/stiffer as well. Posting a worn picture might help, but I really don't think this is moriable.

Probably because incorporating a popular jfashion tag like mori girl or 'Dark Mori', on Tumblr will get them views/likes/reblogs? If you want to wear saturated black clothes in the western lagenlook/boho/hippy styles in above examples, don't try and pass it off as mori girl just embrace the fashion you've decided to dress in and tag it accordingly.
There's no arguement here; mori incorporates darker colours all the time but guess what, it's called mori girl Not Dark Mori. Thank you! I'd been trying to figure out the name forever, I know I'd seen coords in Spoon with only black and dark blue before, I'll look in older issues then.

I know that one magazine (either spoon or mori girl valon) has a black and white 'Mori-ish' feature (for one of furfur's ranges), but I wouldn't really call that mori either.

I bought the shoes from ebay UK over a year ago, they're by 'Giselle'. I managed to find them again but they only have smaller sizes left:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/WOMENS-LADIES-NEW-LACE-UP-HI-HIGH-ANKLE-WINTER-COWBOY-RIDER-BOOTS-Size-3-4-/281301715152?pt=UK_Women_s_Shoes&var=&hash=item417ee388d0

The tops are soft so you can undo the top laces and fold them over if you want (as I have).

I was thinking the same thing about the hair accessories, the little barrette things look a bit better when my hair is bigger and fluffier but they really aren't cutting it and I'd like to get some more substantial, mori type ones. Appreciate the feedback, thanks anon.

Not talking about only you specifically, but you guys need to calm down and stop putting these j-fashions into this tight vacuum. I'm convinced that if I even simply took a mori coord from a scan and shoop the color of the outfit to black and blue and grey, you'd find a way to say that it's not mori looking at all.

Numa girl isn't necessarily a specific aesthetic away from mori, just mori girls with a sense of humor in a way who love the style but admit that they can't live up to the dreamy, innocent persona that Choco's list advocates. There's a lot of normal mori coords in their mixi group's WAYWT thread, and other kind of halfassed outfits with flowy skirts and band tees. I don't think I ever saw anything resembling Tumblr dark mori over there, but maybe I'm wrong.

Here's a coord from a self-proclaimed numa girl (image for ants, I know, all her pictures are really small). Like I said, a lot of the pictures in the thread are just jokes, things that don't look like mori at all, or basic mori coords. It's more their attitude that sets them apart, because they like to talk about gross/improper stuff that your average Japanese mori girl would side-eye them for.

I don't know what the situation is like outside of the UK but those type of waistcoats were very fashionable about 1-2 years ago so they often pop up on ebay. I find if you search for 'waistcoat' or 'summer cardigan' along with the 'auction' and 'price+p+p:lowest first' settings, you can often find sleeveless type cotton waistcoats. There's usually several hundred results but it doesn't take long to speed browse the listings and look for a bargain. I just found the following using the same search method:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/River-Island-Size-8-Waistcoat-/151344002586?pt=UK_Women_s_Waistcoats&hash=item233cce361a

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Croquet-Cream-waistcoat-One-size-/131227212961?pt=UK_Women_s_Waistcoats&hash=item1e8dc05ca1

I made another mori attempt with my outfit today. For comparison, the images on the left are the sort of relaxed, indie shit I tend to wear anyway, and on the right is me trying to make it more mori-like. It's not easy to make out but the cream bag features a fox and the socks have owl faces on them.

Am I still heading on the right path with this stuff? I'm still thinking that perhaps the plain socks and brown bag in the left pic are a better choice, and that the fox bag and owl socks are starting to venture into more tryhard type territory(?).

Although mori has flexibility, it's very clear on what the visual aesthetics are to look "mori". To say "do your own thing" is that it could be whatever you want without any regard to the original styling. ie: >>7646573 sure this has elements but it's a SOLID BLACK void (sure maybe due to lighting BUT). no breaks in between textures and patterns like >>7647191 for a darker palette. Or worse, someone could take an off-white tracksuit and sew lace trim on it and think or ask the comm if it's mori. It's just ugh....

The whole "witch" and "dark" mori terms need to go away and not piggy back off the word mori.

Look into dark mori. That's more my scene, I'm poking around this thread for insp but wouldn't really wear the pastel colors that most moris favor.

>>7628116
I've seen this girl, I think it's stretching the definition of mori quite a bit since she lacks most of the usual criteria (layers, detail, long silhouette, vintage, nature accessory). However it's a very self-defined style after all. I am surprised she gets so many notes...!

>The whole "witch" and "dark" mori terms need to go away and not piggy back off the word mori.
If the outfit has all of the usual descriptions of mori but with dark colors, why not? This is accepted in the Japanese mori scene as far as I can tell. Of course your critique of that outfit is valid but let's not invalidate that it's useful to describe substyles. Lolita has so many. It's nice to be able to sort by what you want to see that day.

Most of what people call 'goth' these days is very modern looking, belt buckles, studs, pleather, exposed skin. I can see easily why people who like long, layered outfits with a vintage look and nature accessories identify more with mori.

For the people that are actually (arguably) stylish and find their fashion interests occasionally crossing over - lolita with mori elements and visa versa etc and the long dreaded 'inspired by' stuff - how would you suggest people label their outfits if they wish to share them?

I mean, I have been guilty of sharing not strictly lolita outfits with lolita fashion communities but my reasoning at the time was that they encompassed enough of the lolita aesthetic to be relevant. On the other hand, I wouldn't actually call them 'lolita' if i was asked or wear them to a lolita meet up. The approach was more 'some people might find this interesting/worth a look'.

I don't think all people that do this are trying to be 'snowflakes' or deliberately shake up the fashion or be edgy, I get the impression that some are just enjoying wearing things that make them happy and express their mood on a given day.

If you follow and enjoy different fashions I think it's quite common to find yourself influenced by their aesthetic, no matter what style you're going for (and sometimes it's not wholly conscious).

Bitter samefag who can't mori, your petulant bullshit has been adressed mulitiple times in thread. Nobodies panties are twisted, nobody got mad, questions were asked and answered in a calm and intelligent manner, you are literally the only butthurt person in this thread. Like a previous anon said, learn how fashion communities aesthetics work or don't and distance yourself from it. Bottom line, mori girl is a Japanese fashion which whilst having a freedom in it's interpretation still has certain criteria which are primarily notable in clothing >>7648419 is an example of how it's not impossible for westerners, if you are still having trouble comprehending this you are either intellectually challenged or a troll.
