I do this as well.

I am delighted when a character is tan enough for me to cosplay.
It feels as if I am using my skin to the best advantage.
But there are characters that I am fucking nuts over and I will do them anyways because I like them.

It's not gonna get much better while I am young. I can tell you that. When I started cosplaying it was Anthy, Nadia, or Sailor Pluto and that was it. (I've cosplayed each one)
If cosplay keeps being a thing 30-40 yrs from now I think there will be more tanned up people.
We're still trapped with 2 generations of people alive that weren't even aware they were being taught to only value euro-centric beauty. But we know now and subsequent generations will question it as they grow up and be the people in charge.

There's actually a pretty big handful of darker characters, they're just usually secondary characters, from less known series, or girls that play into Japan's "dark skin, light hair" fetish.

You shouldn't be limited to only those characters, either. You can cosplay whatever you want, but you may want to adjust the shade of a wig because some people will complain if the wig looks unfitting for your skin. (this isn't a requirement though)

Off the top of my head, Domon from G Gundam and Alellujah from Gundam 00 are both olive/tan skin. And they're both awesome characters. People just need to watch more fucking anime before they complain.

There's a significant number of non-pale characters in Ikkitousen who are either never cosplayed, or only cosplayed by white girls.

Kannu and Ryofu both have a darker tone, but you almost never see this in cosplays. Gakushu and Saji are both darker. Moukaku was an anime exclusive character, but she's the second darkest just under Taishiji.

The Book of Contemplation by ibn Munqidh makes several mention of blacks in Cairo.

What I used to do for cosplay was just pick tan or darker skinned characters. After a while, I got annoyed that I was just picking my characters not because I liked them but that they looked like me.
So now, I've started to choose characters that I actually like or if I feel too embarrassed about my skin, a character that has a mask or is fully clothed or armored.

And like 98% of all characters based in a parallel Earth are Japanese. Ones outside that world are usually based on Japanese people or are in a fantasy Europe.

Side characters can be and are endearing. You do not need to be the focal point to have characterization and be likable. Look at the entire damn cast of Jet Set Radio for god's sake. I do a lot generic character classes and enemy units, but that's more because I just tend to enjoy those designs and games (fucking FF and DQ is half my cosplay plans). There are also giant robots, armors, toku heroes, monsters, etc. There are a lot of options if you're gonna be self conscious of your skin tone. You shouldn't be though. Cosplay and cons is silly dress up weekend for nerds.

Anyways. Here is Meena from Dragon Quest 4. There is also Maya, her sister, from the same game. Both are more recognized than you would think.

I tan every summer, and I primarily attend summer cons. I would be cosplaying Lana while I have a tan. I would not be tanning -for- Lana, I would be wearing Lana while I already have the tan. I would be closer to her skin tone, but not intentionally. Likewise, Lana is not fully black. So technically I'd be a white person cosplaying a part white, part black character.

The problem is, I don't want to end up getting lambasted for it at every turn like Korra girl did.

What about Asians with darker skin? While some Asian groups are fairer than others, the majority are never as paper white as a lot of animu charcters are made to looks(Caucasian folks have the pale pasty thing down without having to do much to their skin). Not to mention the wide noses and tiny eyes that are common. I just find it interesting, because a lot of people will say you're perfect to cosplay something JUST because you're Asian, despite not having any of the features the character has.

It's all a moot point, no one will ever look like a Chinese cartoon, just an observation.

People aren't just surrounded by people who look just like them anymore. They are growing up with Nigerians, Russians, Mexicans, Chinese RIGHT THERE. They are likely to find people who don't look just like them beautiful as well.
