Morning, cgl! I come with a question (and to keep it cosplay related, post any pics related)

I'm starting to notice a trend with the cosplayers (most particularly females) all cosplaying the same people. Even the famous cosplayers. It's always Black Cat, Chun Li/Cammy, Felicia/Morrigan, Yoko, and etc. What is cgl's view on cosplaying something you have never watched/played or even know anything about? I can see if you're paid to do modeling for something that isn't released (i.e. jnig with Lollipop Chainsaw) but why put in all of this time, effort, and work towards a costume from something you have never even graced? Don't give me any of that "I just like the design" bs, either. I can understand Sakizou as it's literally just art, but what about gaming/anime/manga related cosplays? It really sucks to ask for a photo and compliment them on it/comment on it and be met with "didn't watch/play lol!"

tl;dr why cosplay from shit you don't care about

Saying "b-but I liked the d-design" is just a more preferable way to admitting "I did it because it looked like it would give me lots of attention!".

When was the last time you heard someone, who picked a character from an older show/whatever that's not in the mainstream pop culture and/or one that doesn't wear a revealing outfit, say "I liked the design"?

Just call it what it is.

There's loads of (actually) great character designs that are ignored just because they won't give you attention.

Nope. Vast majority of anime has really really fucking dull costuming. Pretty much anything interesting gets pounced on.

Anyone who does Granado Espada, Magna Carta and Shining Wind costumes, and sometimes Saint Seiya. It's also extremely common with CLAMP artbook stuff. People want to wear pretty/impressive things, particularly for competitions.

I know several female cosplayers who don't cosplay super skimpy popular designs, and whose fandom for the things they cosplay is enough that they could hold their own on /a/ or /co/ discussions.

So you can't say "all" cosplayers are just looking for attention instead of doing it for fandom's sake.

OP here but I started this because I saw someone I had liked on Facebook making a (terrible) Female Barbarian D3 costume and when questioned why she still played/what level she was

"I don't have the game lol!"

Why? I just don't get it. Why go through all of the effort, planning, cost, and creation of a costume that is not only from a terrible game, but haven't even played it? It's not even an impressive design or costume, but maybe it's because it's revealing?

I really hate this stereotype because more often then not the person your accusing actually knows their shit. I know plenty of people who've been in the same boat. Even I've been caught not remembering a name, or an armor type ect. on the spot while drunk at a con, but because I have my tits hanging out I'm labeled as a 'fake gamur gurrl', from other fucking catty bitches. Fuck that shit and talk to me when I'm sober. No one ridicules men when they fuck facts up, then proceed to push their personal views onto them. Before you start jumping to conclusions maybe get to know the cosplayer first? But then that'd be too much effort on your part. Fuck the lot of you for turning this into more of a con game for lards who get off on these kind of accomplishments.

Some people like a good challenge. Some people like to pick things that force them to use new techniques or try something really crazy. Revealing or not, some people pick designs because they genuinely like them sometimes.

I do that a lot. If I see a design I really like from something I know nothing about, I'll at least try to make a decently-sized dent in whatever the source material is before making the costume. I won't usually cosplay it if the series absolutely sucks, though. I've dropped a lot of anime that I got into for the designs (Sword Art Online, etc.)

How would you even know if they know/like the series or not? What are you going to do? Quiz them? Come on grow up. If they put the time and effort into the costume let them have fun with it even if it was just because they liked the design. It really is. I mean, say I cosplay a character from a 30-minute one-episode OVA. it took a half hour out of my life to become familiar with the source material. Am I somehow less of a fan than someone who put hours into playing a video game and then cosplayed from it? We both liked the thing enough to make and wear a costume from it. Does it really matter that much who put in more time? What about Vocaloid fans who cosplay from PVs? All they had to do was watch a 3-minute video to be acquainted with the source material. Maybe they're all posers too.

tl;dr: in a perfect world, maybe cosplay would only be a true expression of fandom, but people also want an excuse to dress up. Deal with it.
